I think so. A section is a British/Canadian/Australian term for squad.

a section is about 5 to 8 personnel, as far as infantry goes its called a fireteam.
a true section is for personnel that work within battalion hq, they work in a section made of 5-10 personnel. such as a s-1, s-2, s-3 and ect. hhq sections are really a squad.

a question:

What role do NCO's play in the US Army & Marines. In the Australian Army (and I'm guessing it's the same with the Brits etc), a section (8-9 blokes) is commanded by a Corporal, with a Lance-Corporal assisting with admin (ie, casualty & ammo checks after contacts). The Platoon Sargeants handle platoon admin, whilst command is left up to the LT.

To tell the truth, I'm not really sure wtf Warrant Officers do, except yell at you, so if someone knows this, I'd appreciate an answer.

Your army, the NZ, mine, and the Brits have the WOs at the platoon level. Master WOs are the Company Sergeant Majors and Chieft WOs are the Regimental Sergeant-Majors.

yeah, but wth do they do? As far as I can see, the Sgt handles admin, and the LT handles tactical stuff.

BTW, I'm in the Army Reserve, training to be an officer. It's amazing the amount of stuff they don't tell you. It's up to us, as officers-in-training, to work it all out. Sheesh.

No, they tell you if what you want to do is feasible ... but don't let them fool you into doing something else.

That's what the FMs are for. They're your bible.

What about the stories that I hear and read that senior officers tell you first thing when you first report to a platoon as a newly commissioned 2nd Lt.:

Ignore the FMs and listen to what your sergeant tells you and do what he says.

Stories. The Sergeant trains the LTs to become better officers. They know what works and what doesn't. However, you better know what they're doing and why they're doing it. If you are going to ignore the FMs, you better also know what you're ignoring and why you're ignoring.

However, this is way overblown. Captains and Majors don't give LTs much leadway.
