How big was the force we inserted into northern Iraq? Were they special ops or paratroopers?

The 173rd Airborne Brigade flew from northern Italy and parachuted into northern Iraq. Two parachute infantry battalions plus combat support. I think a mech element from The Big Red One with M113's landed after the 173rd had secured a lodgement.

I don't think this could have happened with helicopter mobile forces.

There was already some Special Forces in the general area, maybe with the Kurds, but jumping was the best way to get the brigade on the ground fast.

What division is more likely to see combat (in any given situation): 101st or the 82nd?

We sent in ROUGHLY(i cant remember exact numbers) a company of M-113s, a platoon or two of Bradleys, and a platoon or two of M-1A1HA Abrams(all via C-17). There was also a large and powerful SOF operational detatchment present, and they were actually in overall command of the operation- which was a US first.

I actually knew this op was underway before the first C-17 lifted off cause one of the Abrams TCs was dating one of the female pilots on my board and gave her the good ole', "Honey i'm being sent on a secret mission..." routine. And i guess she had to tell SOMEONE, so who better than me i guess???(still trying to figure that one out...maybe she told 100 people, lolol).

I gotta admit, knowing for days before it came public(i told no one of course) was pretty damned cool. Felt like i was actually somehow involved.

It was 8 M113A3s, 4 M1064A3s, 5 Abrams, 5 Bradleys, and I think 1 M88.

We discussed it in this thread but unfortunately most of the links listed are now dead.
