U.S. Suspends Israel from JSF Project

U.S. Suspends Israel from JSF Project - Paper

http://www.defensetalk.com/news/publ...e_002309.shtml

TEL AVIV (Reuters): The United States has suspended Israel from joint efforts to produce a new warplane, in protest at the Jewish state's defense dealings with China, an Israeli newspaper said on Thursday citing U.S. sources.
The Pentagon included Israel among foreign partners in developing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in 2003. Under the deal, Israel was promised first purchase of the advanced warplanes due out next decade, ahead of non-partner nations.

But Maariv daily said Washington suspended Israel from the JSF project after alleging it had violated a U.S. export ban by upgrading China's fleet of Israeli-supplied Harpy attack drones.

The United States, which gives Israel some $2.9 billion in aid annually, has opposed past Israeli arms sales to Beijing, citing concern that the technology could be used against its ally Taiwan in any conflict. Officials at the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv were not immediately available for comment on the Maariv report.

Israel had denied wrongdoing in the Harpy deal, calling it routine repairs. The Israeli Defense Ministry declined comment on the Maariv report, saying only that U.S. ties were good.

"Our relations with the United States are solid and we are holding talks to solve misunderstandings that arose as a result of the Harpy deal," an ministry spokeswoman.

Industry newspaper Defense News has said the JSF jets, expected to cost at least $100 million each, would have fighter, bomber and surveillance capabilities.

THE United States has suspended Israel from joint efforts to produce the new F-35 jet fighter in which Australia has an involvement.

The move was in protest at the Jewish state's defence dealings with China, an Israeli newspaper said today, citing US sources.

The Pentagon included Israel among foreign partners in developing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in 2003.

Under the deal, Israel was promised first purchase of the advanced warplanes due out next decade, ahead of non-partner nations.

But the Maariv newspaper said Washington suspended Israel from the JSF project after alleging it had violated a US export ban by upgrading China's fleet of Israeli-supplied Harpy attack drones.

The United States, which gives Israel $US2.9 billion ($3.77 billion) in aid annually, has opposed past Israeli arms sales to Beijing, citing concern that the technology could be used against its ally Taiwan in any conflict.

"We continue to raise our concerns on the sale and transfer of technology to China," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman in Washington.

But he said Israel was a "security cooperation partner" in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and the US remained committed to selling Joint Strike Fighter aircraft to Israel.

Israel had denied wrongdoing in the Harpy deal, calling it routine repairs. The Israeli Defence Ministry declined comment on the Maariv report, saying only that US ties were good.

"Our relations with the United States are solid and we are holding talks to solve misunderstandings that arose as a result of the Harpy deal," a ministry spokeswoman said.

Industry newspaper Defence News has said the JSF jets, expected to cost at least $US100 million ($130.14 million) each, would have fighter, bomber and surveillance capabilities.

I agree.

Nothing better then giving away billions of taxpayer dollars a year only to have our face spit in and be stabbed in the back.

The Harpy deal was nothing. We should have cut them off when the sold the Lavi to China. When Isreal is patting you on the back, they are looking for a soft spot to stick the knife. Spies in the Pentagon, tapping the White House phones, we need to pull the plug and let them fend for themselves.

If they want to sell to China fine with me. Let them pay for their own military then. NAVAIR could use that three billion. I understand the Isrealis are in a tough position, but we've put a lot on the line for them and the least they could do is not sell advanced technology to our enemies.

Yeah, but I'm still not willing to leave them on their own.

"""""On 2 February 1983, for example, a column of Israeli tanks attempted to enter the US compound around the Beirut IAP. The Israelis were so stubborn in their insistence to enter the area that a captain of the US Marines had to climb to the leading Merkava and threaten the commander to turn around at a gun-point. When the Israeli column refused to pull away from the USMC finally deployed several AH-1T Cobra helicopters, equipped with TOW-anti-tank missiles, forcing them to do so under a threat of attack."""""

We were only there because really they (Israel) bit off more then they could chew in Lebanon. It was easier to get in then out (hell they only got out in 2000). Over 300 Americans, Frenchmen and Italians died in Lebanon during 1983.

To get a good look into how much they really like us one should read "Israel's Lebanon War" which was written in about 1985 by two Israelis. It really shows one what Reagan thought of them. Puts Sharon in a new light as well.

"If they want to sell to China fine with me. Let them pay for their own military then"

They would totally fall apart. Kind of like Indochina after the aid got pulled out. Our money is what gives them a military edge. Not only money but we also give them free equipment not covered by the money. Its not a safety net but a wheel chair. But it does seem time to show them who is in charge.

"Israel is the main source of alot of our problems....costly too."

I do wonder if we would have some of the problems we have if we didn't bankroll them and always take their side.

Israel's military and nuclear arsenal far outclasses anyone in their neighborhood. There was a time when they needed our support, but that time is long past.
