Oh, I'm not denying Israel made a lot of blunders in 73 and 82, and I never said Israel was unbeatable. I'm just saying that they did not have more advanced technology in every area. Despite what you said about the Shermans not being bad just cause they are old, Arab armour was still superior in 67 and 73. The IAF had for the most part, better planes, although not all of the Arab planes were crap. Sniper, look at how 73 ended, the IDF had re-crossed the Suez and was actually CLOSER to Cairo than before the war began. I don't think there was ever really a danger of the war coming to Israeli cities, even though Israel did seriously **** up the beginning of the war. After 67 Israelis started to worship the tank, and didn't give their armoured divisions any infantry support, thinking that any job infantry could do, armour could do it better. This, along with underestimating the Egyptians, caused the mauling you spoke of. But Israeli stupidity does not mean the Arabs had severe technological disadvantage (there is no cosmological force making sure things are balanced
). Troung, I would have to admit that by the end of 73 Israel did have better weapons cause of the US airlift, while the Soviet airlift to the Arabs just resupplied them with the types of weapons they already had.Just as Israel's military achievements are often overstated, I think its technological superiority is also overstated at times. I am not saying that it was completely non-existant, but I don't think it was as great as many people say it was. Last edited by ZFBoxcar : 06-29-2005 at 10:58 AM. |

On the first night of the war a Syrian tank column(Bde in strength) was on the road to Tel Aviv with absolutely NOTHING in their way. The Bde CO hesitated, and waited until morning to attack. By then, the Israelis had put together a Bn sized armored TF and were able to blunt the subsequent Syrian attack into the heartland of Israel. The Syrians F'ed up, big time...the war was theirs to win, and they choked(The syrian commanding general was executed after the war for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory). After the syrians screwed up in the north they pressed the egyptians to attack beyond their planned offensive, which is how the Israelis were able to counterattack across the Sainai penninsula. Had the Egyptians not bowed to Syrian pressure the Israelis would've never been able to launch their counter-attacks succesfully. |
