Slain Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh had long history of attacks

Slain Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh had long history of attacks

BEIRUT, Lebanon: The accusations against Imad Mughniyeh, one of the world's most wanted terrorists, read like a laundry list of the 1980s most vicious bombings, kidnappings and hijackings.

Mughniyeh, who was killed Tuesday in car bomb in the Syrian capital of Damascus, is accused of masterminding the 1983 bombings if the U.S. Embassy and Marine barracks in Beirut, the 1985 hijackings of a TWA airliner and two Kuwaiti jets, the kidnappings of Westerns including journalist Terry Anderson.

And he allegedly did all this before he turned 30.

Mughniyeh's life as a militant started early. Born in the southern village of Tair Debba on Dec. 7, 1962, Mughniyeh's young years were shaped by Israeli forces regularly fighting Palestinian guerillas. Mughniyeh, the eldest of four children, spent his childhood in the southern Beirut suburbs — an area teeming with Shiite Muslim fundamentalists.

As a teenager, the high-school dropout joined Palestine Liberation Organization guerillas fighting in southern Lebanon.

When Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982, Mughniyeh drifted to the newly formed Shiite Muslim militant group Hezbollah and quickly climbed the ranks.

He was put under the wing of the guerrilla group's "spiritual guide," Shiite cleric Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, who made him in charge of Hezbollah's "special apparatus."

Later he became Hezbollah's security officer and is believed to be the brains behind Islamic Jihad, or Islamic Holy War, Hezbollah's strike arm and suspected of behind nearly every kidnapping of Westerners in Lebanon during the 1980s including Anderson, a former Associated Press chief Middle East correspondent who was held for six years.

The death of one of his brothers in 1985 sparked a bitter hatred for Americans. Mughniyeh's brother, Jihad, was killed along with 74 others in a car bombing in Beirut that Hezbollah blamed on the CIA.

Along with the 1983 bombings in Beirut that killed more than 300 people, the U.S. government indicted him for allegedly masterminding the 1985 hijacking of TWA flight in which an American Navy diver was killed.

He also is believed to have been involved in hijacking two Kuwait jetliners in 1985. Israel accused him of involvement in the 1992 bombing of Israel's embassy in Argentina in which 29 people were killed and the blast at a Buenos Aires Jewish center two years later that killed 95.

Mughniyeh also was believed to be connected to the 1996 attack on the Khobar Towers complex, in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 American service members.

In the later years of his life, Mughniyeh disappeared but continued to evade authorities. He is reported to have cut relations with his wife, a cousin who he married in 1983, and his two children. He reportedly underwent plastic surgery to alter his looks and used dozens of forged passports when traveling.

"He used to use the passport for every trip then change it," said Faris bin Hizam, a Saudi journalist who closely follows Islamic groups.

Mughniyeh's last reported appearance was believed to be at the funeral of one of his other brothers, Fuad, who was killed on Dec. 12, 1994, when a booby-trapped car blew up in the southern suburb of Beirut.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV aired a rare picture of Mughniyeh after announcing his death on Wednesday. The picture was of a burly, bespectacled, bearded man in military fatigue wearing a cap. It identified him with the nom du guerre, "Hajj Radwan."

Mughniyeh's body returned Wednesday to southern Beirut — where he spent his childhood — in a coffin wrapped in Hezbollah's yellow flag.

Yep good riddance. I didn't know who the guy was until I read more about him. The world is definitely a better place without him. Only if we could do the same to those LeT leaders and those responsible for the IC84 hijacking and the murder of that Indian husband and father.

IC814,
Mohammed Azhar is running around Pakistan fighting the Americans now, and attracting funds for LeT.

Put him on the UAV hotlist and even though he may be in Pak it will probably be only a matter of time before he yawns and finds a hellfire coming though his window.

Hezbollah declares 'open war' on Israel

CTV.ca | Hezbollah declares 'open war' on Israel

CTV.ca News Staff

Israel put its embassies and Jewish groups around the world on alert after Thursday after Hezbollah accused the nation of assassinating its top guerrilla commander and declared "open war" on the country.

The declaration by Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah came as thousands of supporters gathered in Beirut on Thursday to mourn the death of Imad Moughniyeh, who was killed by a car bomb on Wednesday in Damascus.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Western-backed government crowded a downtown square to mark the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005, putting the two opposing groups in close proximity and creating a potential powder keg.

Heavy rain and a strong military presence may have helped prevent serious conflict, however, said CTV's Mideast Bureau Chief Janis Mackey Frayer as the funeral procession began to wind down.

"It's always a formula for tension and certainly that was seen across Beirut. Thousands of army troops as early as yesterday started blocking off streets. There are still (troop carriers) parked on street corners here as a means to keep the factions apart," she told CTV's Canada AM.

Leaders on both sides had appealed for calm as it became evident that both sides would be marking major events on the same day, in the same city.

However, most observers expected conflict.

The Lebanese parliament's anti-Syrian majority had called for a massive show of support for the Hariri memorial, with hopes that a large turnout on the anniversary would break a 15-month political stalemate that has paralyzed the country.

And Hezbollah leaders had called on supporters in south Beirut -- a stronghold for the militant organization -- to march behind Mughniyeh's coffin and to ""carry on our shoulders a leader of whose leadership we were proud, and a martyr by whose martyrdom we're honored.''

"Let us make our voice heard by all the enemies and murderers that we will be victorious, no matter the sacrifices,'' said a Hezbollah statement aired on the militant group's Al-Manar TV.

Most wanted

One of the world's most wanted for decades and the former security chief of Hezbollah, the elusive Mughniyeh was killed Tuesday night in a car bombing in Syria.

A picture of Mughniyeh that was released after his death was one of the first images seen in years. It showed he had gained weight and apparently undergone some facial reconstruction to alter his appearance.

"It says a lot about exactly how shadowy this man was, exactly how wanted he was and exactly what a mastermind he was, that he was able to avoid authorities for so long," Mackey Frayer said.

Israel and the U.S. have both denied any involvement in Mughniyeh's death, but have not expressed any regrets about it.

"Israel is definitely sensing some satisfaction with this. They're denying they had any involvement with the assassination of Mughniyeh but they are welcoming it, as did the United States," Mackey Frayer said.

Hezbollah and Iran have both blamed Israel for the bombing that blew up Mughniyeh's SUV in Damascus.

If this is a real threat, Hezbollah should be wiped out completely now. They already put their people through HELL, and now this? One reason why Lebanon cannot move forward: Hezbollah

Much praise to whoever did it.

Damascus

"Hezbollah and Iran have both blamed Israel for the bombing that blew up Mughniyeh's SUV in Damascus."

We know that Assad & the Alawites (heh-heh my favorite lounge lizards appearing nightly at the Holiday Inn) supposedly have a "lock" on Damascus and the nation. A "police state", right? This wouldn't be the first time that the Israelis have made a Damascus hit. Nor others.

You'd think that Mughniyeh would operate w/ impunity in Syria as a senior minion of Nasrallah. Clearly not. I suppose I'm surprised by how seemingly vulnerable Syria is to these ops. This, btw, is a hell of an operation against a very big and very careful target. Actually quite amazing.
