Israel launches raids into Gaza

Perhaps this ought to bring the fighting between Hamas and Fatah to an end. Nothing unites Arab enemies like Israel:

Israel launches raids into Gaza

Israel has launched air raids in Gaza and deployed tanks and infantry across the border after it vowed a severe response to rocket attacks on its soil.

It said its land force was small and had been deployed as a deterrent.

At least three militants were killed in four separate air raids, one of which targeted Hamas offices in Gaza City.

The Israeli attacks came as fighting eased between Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah. It has left at least 40 people dead in the past five days.

Correspondents say the rocket attacks into Israel appeared to be an attempt to draw it into an internal Palestinian conflict, although the Israeli defence ministry denied its attacks were linked to factional fighting.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who leads Fatah, on Thursday suddenly called off a trip to Gaza that had been billed as an effort to shore up the fourth Hamas-Fatah ceasefire in five days.

Officials said he might now travel from Ramallah in the West Bank on Friday.

The BBC's Magdi Abdelhadi says control of the security forces appears to have been the trigger for the latest factional fighting but that it has now developed a momentum of its own.

Armed supporters on the ground may no longer be paying attention to orders from their political leadership, he says.

On Thursday in Washington, US President George W Bush said both he and visiting UK Prime Minister Tony Blair were urging all parties to work for peace.

100 Rockets were fired into Israel this week so there is definately some pressure on Olmert to respond. Also Israel hasn't hit Hamas in awhile so they had intel really gatehred up and prepared so they really went after whatever senior Hamas operatives there are left which isn't many. Part of Israel's very effective systematic elimination of Hamas leaders is that there simply isn't many senior field operatives left which is why it seems Gaza fighters have trouble stopping to fight when cease fires are declared.

however I think that this recent bombing by Israel was also a lifeline thrown to Abbas to get the internal fighting to stop. Israel doesn't do these things for free and it will expect payback from Abbas in the future I'm quite certain.

Olmert had the chance to hit them hard before. The problem being Israel is, its so small, geographically. Meaning if this was Australia and they were landing in the middle of the Northern Territory where no one was living then who cares. But with the small Israel, residential is near. Olmert should not over react by these missiles.

Sderot, and other towns bordering Gaza are not that big or well populated. Thats not it. These attacks rarely kill anyone. Thats also not it. It doesn't matter. They are launching rockets into Israeli territory, and on principle, it doesn't matter if its barren desert or populated. If you let this go, that just encourages an escalation. Arab culture resents weakness and respects power. If you blink, they next series of attacks will be much worse.

With the internal struggle going on in Palestine, it apparently is important for them to divert the attention on to a common foe, who will surely hit back and the then the fun and games will be back to its normal high!

Ray, the Palestinians carry on like that whether there are internal "disputes" or not. Given their media and "education" system, I regrettably see more of the same nihilism.

In my view Stan187 has called it correctly.
