Gates Assures Israel on Plan to Sell Arms to Saudis

By DAVID S. CLOUD
Published: April 20, 2007

TEL AVIV, April 19 — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Thursday that he had reassured Israel that a planned major American arms sale to Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries would not threaten Israel’s military superiority and was necessary to counter a threat from Iran.

I wonder how this will affect the Peace Process.

Saudi Arabia, as I see, is the most unreliable ally of the US. Others may not share my view, but ever since it the Saudis stated that the US War in Iraq was illegal, Saudis' stock as an ally fell and it was a turncoat action!

Then, much against the US' wishes, it started to dialogue with Iran.

Now, if the Saudis get sophisticated weapons, then Israel is sure to have a huge problem, what with the Hamas, Saudis, Syrians, Hezbollah and Iran crawling all over her.

A known adversary is a better bet for safety since they are predictable than a turncoat quisling!

Just my view.

Ray,

Turncoats, yes, but I don't think they'll necesarilly be a big threat to Israel mainly because if they're so scared of Iran they'll think twice about giving Hamas the weapons that they get because they might need to defend themselves against the Iranians with them. And I certainly don't see them challenging the Israelis in an open non-proxy manner.
