'Kurd attack' kills 12 in Turkey

The attack follows the recent killing of a senior PKK figure.
Twelve people have been killed after Kurdish separatists ordered them off a bus in south-east Turkey and opened fire, Turkish officials say.
Civilians and armed guards were said to be among the victims of the ambush, and just two passengers survived.

The attack, in Sirnak province near the Iraqi border, followed the killing of a Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) leader.

On Friday Iraq and Turkey signed a security agreement aimed at curbing the activities of the banned PKK.

The Turkish government in Ankara says 4,000 PKK fighters are operating from the Iraqi side of the border.

Turkey has been considering crossing the border to pursue the group.

Sticking point

But on Friday Iraq denied Turkey permission to pursue armed separatists onto Iraqi territory.

Instead they signed a wide-ranging deal, pledging to prevent finance, logistical support and propaganda for the PKK.

Ankara has warned Baghdad to crack down on Kurdish rebels in Iraq or face a possible incursion by Turkish troops.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in south-eastern Turkey since 1984 and more than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

The PKK has been labelled a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU.

1- one of these "terrorist" groups is PKK...if you can not accept it as a terrorist group then you are one of them?

2-so maybe you know why US is NOT doing ANYTHING about this? except supplying them?

calling them as "separatists" is also a tactic...

i remember the british answer to ottoman govt. during greek revolts...

"we can not block the russian fomentations in the greece but we can control the newly born greek govt."

"The PKK has been labelled a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU." means that : they are labelled as terrorists by them but we dont...

The U.S. recognises them as terrorists and thats good enough for me. That still doesn't give Turkey the green light to just cross over into a soveriegn nations territory to go after them, like they keep threatening.

Perhaps if Turkey had supported the U.S. when they went after Iraq maybe the U.S. would have been more inclined to work with Turkey in the post war aftermath. Secondly your just insinuating the U.S. is helping the PKK without any real proof....

Smilingassassin: You're wasting your time. 'Big K' is incapable of understanding that those posts I've made are from the bbc.com, WorldTribune.com and breitbart.com. Since he continuously resorts to personal attacks, he assumes all posts about Turkey are 'ad hominem'.

it is very ironic that this debate took place just about the same time with the decision of US about the partition of Iraq which Turkey is totally against.

Point 1 : That is right. No country should cross over into its neighbouring countries at will. This holds true as long as, the neighbouring countries show sufficient action and initiative to destroy terrorist groups operating from their territory. In the case of Iraq, even before the Iran-Iraq war, Northern Iraq was not very strictly regulated by the Saddam regime. The Iran-Iraq war destabilized the region even further, and the withdrawal of Iraq forces left significant armament that was absorbed by various organizations operating from the region, including PKK/PJAK and Hezbollah. As of today, Turkey is suffering significantly from the actions of PKK and the Iraqi Central government is not in a position to do anything about it, and moreover, not allowing Turkey to do anything about it. Please stop for a minute and make an analogy on this between USA and Mexico.

Point 2 : Right on point. The refusal of Turkey to participate in the War in Iraq has left Turkey with a bill it can not afford to pay. Even showing some support, such as allowing use of bases would alter Turkey's position today significantly.

Point 3 : The Turkish Prime Minister Mr.Erdogan said in his latest speech that PKK was found to be in possession of "US heavy weapons including artillery and tanks." However, he has not provided and sources, and personally I think he does not know the distinction of heawy weapons, artillery, and tanks.
There are no substantial sources on this, only the Prime Ministers rambling until some solid source is provided.

I think Big K is reading the posts, and the articles in the links with a highly sensitive mind setting. Nobody here argued that these organizations are "Freedom Fighters" and not terrorists.

Agreed, it's quite a stretch to state the US is just giving away M1A2s and M109s. Especially to some irregular Kurds.
