NWFP govt to fight for Hasba

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: The NWFP government announced on Saturday that it would fight a legal battle for the implementation of the Hasba Bill in the province.

Provincial Information Minister Asif Iqbal Daudzai also told newsmen after a cabinet meeting that a revised draft of the bill will be presented in the upcoming Assembly session on October 10. He said that most of the clauses declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court had been revised. However, the NWFP government will also file a review petition in the Supreme Court to seek the revival of Sections 23 and 25 of the Hasba Bill, which do not conflict with the Islamic Ideology Council or the Sharia Laws, the information minister said.

The minister said that the ongoing tussle between the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam - the two major components of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal - will have no impact over the passage of the bill.

The minister also announced a Ramazan relief package for consumers, according to which flourmills would be given a subsidy of Rs 33.3 million. He said that the subsidy will help provide flour at lower prices to the people.

This is very upsetting. Just when a ray of enlightenment was reaching!

I don't understand why they should try to fight against the Supreme Court verdict. I am sure their appeal will again go the same way.

The Hasba will just give the radicals a handle to terrorise the public and push them back into time.

The Pakistan federal government is trying to get out of the timewrap and here are old fogeys who want to return to medieval times!
