Magnitude-7.8 earthquake strikes Iran, USGS says

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck Iran on Tuesday, according to the United States Geographical Survey.
Reuters cited witnesses as saying that tall buildings shook as far as way as New Delhi, with the tremors sending people running into the streets. Intense shaking was also felt in southern Pakistan.

The quake struck at 3:44 p.m. local time in southeastern Iran, about 50 miles east of the city of Khash and near the Pakistani border, the USGS reported.

The epicenter was in a thinly populated area, according to maps from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Agency. The nearest city of any size, Khash, has a population of 70,000, the agency said.

Tuesday's quake was the second significant one in Iran in a week. An April 9 earthquake near the country's only nuclear power plant killed 37 people and injured at least 850 more, leaving entire villages devastated.

Russian company that built Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant says there is no damage from quake

Glad the death toll wasn't higher. I'm guessing there are a lot of buildings in Iran that aren't up to a big quake. Not happy about nuclear reactors near active fault lines. Pleased they weren't damaged.

The epicenter was a relatively sparsely populated area.

Iran seems to be getting hit by many earthquakes of late.

This happened yesterday April 18th at 3 pm. We are used to so many devastating quakes that 5.2 quake on Richter scale is considered "moderate". #3 in span of 10 days.

TEHRAN, Iran A moderate earthquake that shook a small town in Iran's northwest on Thursday afternoon injured two people, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The magnitude-5.2 quake shook the town of Tasooj at 3:09 p.m. (1039 GMT) on Thursday. The town is about 600 kilometers (370 miles) northwest of the capital, Tehran.

The spokesman of emergency department of East Azerbaijan Province, Habib Hasangholizadeh, told IRNA that the two injured people were taken to a hospital in Tasooj.

It was the third quake in Iran in the past 10 days. A magnitude-7.5 quake shook a sparsely populated area near the Pakistani border on Tuesday. A week before that, a magnitude-6.1 quake struck another part of the south, killing 37 people and injuring hundreds.

So far the Thursday quake has had 16 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 2.1 to 4.1.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the original earthquake at 4.8.

Iran lies on seismic fault lines and experiences one slight quake a day on average.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude-6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern Iranian city of Bam.

Not to wish harm on anyone, but maybe a natural caused accident with nuclear energy and the subsequent results might've served to turn the Iranian public against the headlong rush to nuclear power in the same way it did in Japan and the US. Reactors in a heavy earthquake prone area probably isn't the best idea. More helpful to have an ally in the Iranian public than depending on military force to eliminate Iran's nuclear program.
