US warns nations seeking Security Council seat not to ask for veto

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US officials have warned Japan, India, Germany and Brazil that they will not support their bids to join the UN Security Council unless they agree not to ask for veto power, the New York Times reported, citing senior diplomats and administration officials.

The current five permanent Security Council members -- the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia, the victors of World War II -- each have veto power in council decisions dating back to the creation of the
    United Nations in September 1945.

    Officials in the administration of
President George W. Bush fear that giving the new members veto power might paralyze the Security Council, the Times reported on Sunday.

"The Security Council is not like an aircraft, with first class, business and economy seats," Ryozo Kato, Japan's ambassador to the United States, told the newspaper.

    UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan has offered two models for Security Council reform.

One is the addition of six new members to the existing five permanent powers. The second is the addition of a third tier of semi-permanent council members. Neither proposal offers veto powers.

My Opinion: India is the 2nd largest supplier of peace keeping troops. India should widhrawl all the troops. And perhaps encourage itself, Japan, Germany and Brasil to leave the UN, and encorage other countries, such as the African, to leave the UN as well. They should bring down the UN, India should stop supporting it. Saying it is a puppet for the western countries. And perhaps start something new that no country gets a veto.

    My Opinion:
The G4 was a big mistake. I blame BJP. Anyway get in the UNSC for now. And allow time to get us the veto.
    I rant, therefore I am.

u know what u can do? Get the UNSC disbanded. Get enough signatures from the 191 countries, the UNSC won't be able to do anything. The UNSC is the thing that renders the UN useless, don't you think?
