Dallaire's problem was that he was never properly prepared for the mission. He was an artillery officer wheras MacKenzie was infantry. As such, MacKenzie was trained to read the enemy, at least have much more exposure than Dallaire to those concepts. Lew never trusted you to keep your word. He would verify and he does not mind verifying with a FIVE-OH aiming straight at you.

Dallaire is the type who would go toe-to-toe with you but once you gave your word, he expects you to keep your word and if you fail to do so, he would stare you down but the action has already took place.

And the other advantage Lew had was that he had a Canadian Battle Group. He didn't need to ask Ottawa or anybody else for permission. The only effective force Dallaire had was a Belgian battle group and he had to notify both Brussels and New York of his intentions. There were ways around that but he didn't know them.

So, the answer is easy. MacKenzie and mainly because he was ready. Dallaire was not.

There was no humanitarian assistance. They were Acts of War against Iraq by supplying all sorts of weapons to Iran but you've missed the point here. Israel is not above dirty actions when she wants it, Israel poison or not. Do you actually think Iran wanted help from Israel?

Colonel,Sir,which ways? The only thing I can think of is to interfere between the 2 sides and asking to be shot at.Also,IIRC,some Belgians were killed and that may had offered an excuse.

Dallaire ****ed up! Period. There is no excuse about it. The situation was that he assigned a section to guard the Rwandan President. That section was butchered when they ran out of ammo.

Dallaire's excuse was that he could not come up with a plan that could have rescued them. And here lies the entire freaking problem! Had he asked the Begliums, they could have came up with a plan with 30 minutes.

Instead, Dalliare, refused to escalate the situation BUT ESCALATION WAS THE ONLY COURSE POSSIBLE!

I seriously wanted to challenge any dumb Rwandans who was stupid enough to take me on hand-to-hand.

Barak: Israel needs 'daring initiative' to thwart international isolation

Defense Minister Ehud Barak has stressed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other members of the forum of seven senior ministers that Israel must put forth a "daring and assertive political initiative" in the coming months to emerge from its international isolation of the past year.

Barak will travel to Washington for talks with senior administration officials on advancing the peace process with the Palestinians.
    Defense Minister Ehud Barak

A senior political source in Jerusalem said that in talks at the forum of seven after the Gaza flotilla incident, Barak spoke a great deal about the damage to Israel's international standing. He repeated this stance in talks about setting up a commission of inquiry.

Barak said that "the international preoccupation" with Israel following the flotilla controversy emphasizes the need to rebuild ties with the United States.

"There is no way to rehabilitate ties with the administration without presenting an assertive political program that will address the core issues of a final settlement with the Palestinians," Barak told Netanyahu and his other colleagues. "It is necessary to make decisions and take genuine political steps."

Barak stressed that the flotilla incident and the assistance of the Obama administration at blocking the establishment of an international commission of inquiry prove how much Israel needs to assist the United States in pushing the peace process forward. If the United States' standing in the world is undermined further, Israel is the one that will suffer, Barak said.

"A political initiative will break us out of the isolation and prevent phenomena like the flotillas to the Gaza Strip and international investigations," Barak told the forum of seven.

"There have been governments in Israel that were able to operate freely from a military point of view only because they initiated political moves. We all need to think what the alternative would be to presenting a political program and what is the significance of continuing with the current situation. Israel's isolation will only intensify."

One reason Barak is trying to convince Netanyahu and the other ministers of the need for change is the growing pressure from within the Labor Party. Ministers from the Labor Party including Isaac Herzog and Benjamin Ben-Eliezer have questioned whether the party should remain in the coalition if the political standstill continues.

The head of the Histadrut labor federation, Ofer Eini, has joined the criticism; Eini is considered a future candidate for the post of party chairman.

The senior political source said that Barak did not pose an ultimatum or threaten leaving the coalition, but in many discussions with the prime minister he made it clear that there is little time left for Israel to present a political initiative.

The next six months are likely to be critical, with September marking the end of the construction freeze in the settlements. Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly will meet in October, followed by the congressional elections in the United States in November.

Barak says that this is the time frame for making a political decision. If an initiative is undertaken, it may be necessary to broaden the coalition by including Kadima. If not, Labor may leave, which would leave Netanyahu with a narrower coalition government including right-wing parties Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu.
Socialism is simply the Collective denial of responsibility.

I agree with you on everything you stated except Dallaire's actions would suit what a politician wants (it empowers them and gives them control over the individual actions of the military) while MacKenzie's actions would not (soldier's initiative to accomplish the job, politician has no say or chance to micromanage). The best way to have a successful mission is to empower the individual to do the job and stay out of his way as long as he doesn't do anything illegal, but politicians don't think that way. These are the same people after all that took issue with Israeli soldiers defending themselves and engaging after being attacked on a flotilla.

MacKenzie never allowed politicians to interfere. He threw out a UN suit from his HQ.

It does a lot for the survivors and it also proves legally that a Genocide did in fact occur which opens the door for reparations and payback for the crimes.

...So Israel is just following the world's lead on that point.
However Israel (same people who suffered a Genocide) takes that to another step. Instead of staying neutral like some others who are scared of Turkey or want to maintain good relations, Israeli lobby (working directly with the Turkish government and their lobby) in America has been using all its powers to block the Armenian Genocide from passing for decades.
Just now recently, since this new incident with the Turkish ship, they have stated that they will no longer block the resolution.

    Thanks but no thanks.

I personally starting to believe that this Gaza aid incident was a setup by Turkey and Israel to deceive Iran and shift the center of Islam from Tehran to Ankara by making Erdogan the champion of Paletinians...........little the Arabs and Persians know Turkey don’t give a damn about the Palestinian cause (however most none Ultra-Nationalist Muslim Turks do care).

We Armenians should point out that, despite Erdogan’s blistering anti-Israeli rhetoric, he has not canceled any of the 16 agreements with Israel, including the exchange of intelligence, according to Today’s Zaman newspaper. Sedat Laciner, head of Ankara-based International Strategic Research Organization, told Hurriyet that the military leaders of the two countries had also signed several secret agreements. According to the Middle East magazine, the intelligence agencies of Israel and Turkey have cooperated "since the 1950’s in the fight against radical Islamist groups and Iranian clandestine operations in the region."
Furthermore, Turkey was reported to have allowed Israel "to monitor Syrian military maneuvers from Turkish soil." In addition, Turkey awarded $1.8 billion in military contracts to Israeli companies. The total trade turnover between the two countries reached $2.5 billion in 2009. Israel just finished upgrading Turkish Tanks. More than 900 large Israeli corporations have been operating in Turkey and over 1,000 small Israeli exporters have established commercial ties with it.

I would like nothing more than a divorce between Israel and Turkey but excuse me I find that very hard to believe. I predict their relationship will improve right after Turkish preliminary elections.

Wait, you mean to tell me this whole thing was a joint venture between Israel and Turkey? Are you freakin' kidding me? Do you really think Israel would put itself through such bad press on purpose? Risk opening the Gaza blockade just to keep Iran out of the world headlines (which is where they should be, keep pressure on Iran) and will let Iran and Syria ship weapons into Gaza leading to more Israeli deaths?

Besides, what motivation does Israel get moving the center or Islam to Turkey? That just means that the fanatics that will inevitably follow will be that much closer to Israel

Its just an hunch..........I hope it is not true.

I find it hard to believe that Israeli intelligence would fall for such Turkish trap. They send you a Trojan horse and you fell for it?

BTW, I have seen the pictures of those Turkish peace activists greeded as heros upon their return in Turkey.........they look more like the Ultra-Nationalist "Gray Wolf" types who man handled your Commandos if you ask me.

Anyway, like I said...I am just guessing.

Israeli Intelligence's main fault was in providing the wrong threat assessment as to what the level of resistance was going to be. They knew what ships were coming, knew who were on them, knew what their plans were (even sabotaged a couple of the ships, if you believe some of the news reports)

Israel was in a lose-lose situation. Israel would not intentionally put itself in a lose lose situation
