    British Royal Succession

If, hypothetically, Prince Charles were to die tomorrow, would Prince Andrew, his eldest oldest son, become king upon the Queen's death, or Prince William, his eldest son?

    Let's say, theoretically:

January 23rd, 2007 - Prince Charles passes away from a heart attack
January 24th, 2007 - Queen Elizabeth passes away from natural causes

Who would be King of England?

    Also, theoretically, let's assume:

January 29th, 2007 - Princes William and Harry die
January 30th, 2007 - Queen Elizabeth passes away
January 31st, 2007 - King Charles passes away

Who would become king in this scenario?

    Another scenario:

    February 14th, 2007 - Prince Harry dies
    March 21st, 2007 - Queen Elizabeth dies
    March 22nd, 2007 - King Charles dies
March 23rd, 2007 - King William dies, no children

    Who is king?

Too less chances of anything like this happening....
    "To every man upon this earth, Death cometh soon or late;
And how can a man die better; Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his father; And the temples of his gods."

Well, much admired Ferrous Ducal Person, it is a subject where (unfortunately) specialist lawyers could wax long and expensively on convoluted archaic laws of Regal Heredity and Succession. But let me remind you of Billy Waggledaggers shrewd obsevation "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown", and suggest you don't volunteer for the position yourself!

Just wondering who would become king according to the laws of succession they have. The examples I gave are hypothetical.

Nay, nay and thrice nay my friend! They have people like Norman St.Jon Stevas who are recognised authorities on such delicate matters.( and they don't come cheap).

I assume you mean they're might be a debate over whether Princess Anne would succeed?

Other than that, the line of succession is pretty damn clear - primogeniture. It has been very clear cut for a long long time...

In the first example, Prince Charles precedes Queen Elizabeth in death. Wouldn't his descendants lose their place in the succession?

No. Their place in the succession is dictated by their birth, and the birth of other royals. Hence Andrew used to be directly after Charles, but after the birth of William and Harry, he moved down the list.

Nope - the 1st son of the 1st son (as it were) takes precendence over the second son. It's been that way for at least 700 years. Of course, in the past and in practise, it has led to any number of unsavoury uncles - Richard III being the most obvious example.

This is a list of the top 100 people in line to the British Throne. Prince Charles is the first in line. If he becomes King then he'll become King Charles III although there were rumours that he wanted to use his middle name George and become King George VII as King Charles I and King Charles II both had unusual, and tragic, reigns. If he does use his middle name then it won't be unusual as many recent British monarchs have also done the same. But he's denied these rumours and will probably still be known as King Charles III.

The second in line to the Throne is Prince William, so he'll become king after Charles. He'll become King William V and if he is married to current girlfriend Kate Middleton she'll be Queen Catherine. So it'll be King William V and Queen Catherine.

After Prince William the next in line to the Throne is Prince Harry but his real name his Henry. So he'll become King Henry IX.

The further down the list of those in line to the British Throne you go, the more obscure they become. For example, if the first 99 people in line to the British Throne all died tomorrow, then the Monarch would become the person who's 100th in line. That person who is 100th in line to the British Throne is HRH Prince Karl Wladimir of Serbia and Yugoslavia. So he'll become King Karl I and would become the first Serbian monarch of Britain. He's the great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

One of those in line to the British Throne is Norway's king, King Harald V. So if, in the unlikely event that he became king (as he is so far down the list) then he'll probably be King of both Norway and Britain at the same time.
