Consigned to history? Guy Fawkes will not feature at a bonfire celebration in

Guy Fawkes has been banned by council bosses in east London - and replaced with a Bengali folk tale. Tower Hamlets said it wanted to provide an "alternative" theme to celebrate November 5 and the attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

The council has commissioned a £75,000 fireworks display entitled the Emperor and the Tiger, which tells the story of the "Moghul Emperor, the Wise Man and the Guardian of the Jungle". As a mock Bengal tiger paces a giant catwalk, fire will light up a "forest" to the sound of Bangla drummers and dancers.

Look, I am a Bengali, but this thing of making Guy Fawkes Day into "Bonfire Night" is just too ridiculous!

    In fact, it is stupid.

Further, I have not heard of this Bengali story.

Is this something invented in Brick Lane?

When will the British learn that by allowing such inane and mindless stuff like changes of historical events to get PC, will never achieve integration.

In fact, it allows each community to be distinctly separate.

Or is it that the British are doing it purposely so that their history is not tainted by these 'furriners"?

I don't have to attend every argument I'm invited to.

You only posted part of the story. One third of the inhabitants of Tower Hill are Bengali. Over half the council is composed of Bangali councillors. It is a council decision. We in the UK have simply let far too many immigrants into the country. Councils ruled by 'ethnics' are increasingly common, as the new voters vote for their own kind, or their own religion, often to the detriment of the native born British and the other immigrants. It is a problem, and I don't see it getting any better. It is just one of the legacies of 'New Labour' that will remain to haunt us. I sense dangerous times ahead as the immigrants are entering the country much faster than they can be absorbed. In 2005 legal immigrants were entering the country at a rate of 1,500 a day. Now add the illegals. It is a ridiculous and intolerable situation for a small group of Islands to be in.

It doesn't matter if they are Bengalis and the Council is run by them.

As far as I am concerned, they are British.

They damn well integrate, if they haven't already, which is evident.

One should make a bonfire of these odd fishes!

What is the religious make up of this joint, any idea?

BTW there is no Hindu or Moslem or Jain or Buddhist religious festival on 5 Nov.

So, what is this nonsense they are celebrating?

And why can't they instead celebrate Guy Fawkes Night?

You may be holding a minority view here!

    To a point, perhaps.

    Be my guest.

Not I. London is supposed to be the capital of Britain, but I feel like an alien there, and try to avoid going near the place.

It is the way of things. When a new group moves in and takes over an area, the culture around the land will change and so will the people change too. Look at human history. You will see one group changing into another group that changed into another group.

This is just one example of one bengali group morphing into a new group that a mix of British and Bengali culture. If you want examples, take a look at West Indies culture and see how it is a mix of INdian, the natives, and British to form its own distinctive culture. Hell look at Hawaiians. Look at Brazilians.

THINGS CHANGE. It is the one constant thing in the universe.

    Blademaster,

No one is stating that other cultures should not enrich a nation.

But to celebrate something else when the history and tradition of a Nation celebrates something is not a correct mode.

Imagine, on India's Independence Day, a certain immigrant community decides to celebrate, not the Independence Day, but some Folklore Day.

I am sure that would not be appreciated by native Indians.

    Not true.

What the UK has done is simply let far too many immigrants in from the wrong countries.

If one drills downward from the overabused term “Asian” one will find there are immigrants and there are immigrants.

Contrast the Chinese and Indian immigrants with other so called “Asian” immigrants.

You will find that the Chinese and Indian immigrants are over represented in educational and economic achievement and under represented in negative issues like the prison population and terrorism.

    A heavy Muslim component.

Tower Hamlets has a large concentration of Bengali speaking Bangladeshi origin Muslims, principally originating from the Sylhet area of Bangladesh.

    These Bangladeshi are great cooks.

But they don't understand the English adage - Too many cooks spoil the broth!

It is true that the illiterate Asians of certain denomination bring a bad name to all Asians.

    Throw the vermin out!

I do not disagree but if I were to suggest the obvious remedy (deporting those who are nothing but trouble) in the newspapers nobody would hear my views as no editor would publish them in this surreal PC infested land!

Remember, remember the fifth of November
    Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
    Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
    To prove old England's overthrow.

By God's mercy he was catch'd
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
    Burn him!

There! I guess it takes a Bloody Yank to celebrate your holidays. <Grinning ducking and running>

Some of us still think of you as errant colonials, who if you mend your ways may still be admitted back into the fold. Mind you, elocution lessons will be compulsory, as I've never met an American who can say "May maid Mary marry merry Murray, Mother"?

With all due respect Glyn, why would any but a Brit wish to say that?
