14 die as rivals clash in Khyber Agency Followers of Mufti Shakir, Pir Saifullah battle over provincial govt’s announcement; Eid celebrated in parts of NWFP, Balochistan
KHYBER AGENCY: As many as 14 people were killed and a number of others sustained injuries in an armed clash between two rival groups on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr in Khyber Agency.
According to Radio Tehran, the clash erupted between the Ansar and the Lashkar-e-Islam groups led by Mufti Munir Shakir and Pir Saifullah, respectively, over the provincial government’s announcement regarding sighting of the Shawal moon.
Both sides used modern weapons against each other. Fourteen people have been killed and a number of others sustained injuries in the clash, the report said.
The two groups had frequently clashed with each other over the past year, leading to the killing of scores of people.
The two religious leaders differ over important Sharia issues and have taken up arms against each other. Both the influential groups were recently evicted from Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency by the political administration. —Online
