Rahul ready for greater political role

Rahul ready for greater political role

    NDTV Correspondent

Tuesday, April 25, 2006 (Rae Bareli):

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has said he is ready to take on additional political responsibility.

Touring Rae Bareli as the campaign manager for Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the younger Gandhi today declared he was ready to take charge of the party's campaign in next year's Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

"If the leaders in my party request me to do so I will," he said.

The Congress seems only too willing to have Rahul at the helm of affairs. In fact, senior leaders were unabashed in saying that he should be made in charge of the state campaign unit.

"Youth in the entire country want Rahul to come and take charge. I would also like to say that he should be inducted into the Working Committee and made the head of the AICC," said Ashok Gehlot, General Secretary Incharge, UP.

Many state level party workers believe that only a Gandhi leading the party's campaign can revive the fortunes of the Congress, which has been out of power since 1989.

Rahul's induction in the state's politics has been slow and cautious so far, and he has been put to work only in those areas where the party has a strong presence.

But speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rahul said the Congress had major plans for Uttar Pradesh.

It now remains to be seen whether Rahul's charisma will overcome the complex caste equations in the state and help register electoral victory.

So he is 'ready' like a bolt from the blue sky. All of a sudden.

Only four months ago, he was vociferously denying any party posts. Now he is all set.

Another member of a family that should be tried in courts for misruling India since indepedence enters the realms of power!

    Absolutely gross.

Will he be the next PM?
