I think shipping "A" Sqn, LdSH (RC) is alot more important than planting a flag on a glacier that frankly nobody will see. We have more than enough assets with the Rangers. They can plant a flag just as good as an ice breaker and a whole lot cheaper.

    Old Navy Joke...probably never happened

Believe it or not...this is the transcript of an actual radio conversation between a US naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. The Radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on Oct. 10, 1995.

US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

I understand where you are coming from Officer, but ice breakers are a great tool for a Country like Canada, they can serve not just to protect our soverignty, but they double as search and rescue vessels, and a base for scientists who want to study the arctic.

For a country whose land mass is 40% arctic or sub arctic, no vessels are permanently based in the eastern Arctic, although CCG vessels and aircraft frequently operate there, staging out of bases on the Atlantic coast and supported by a base in Iqaluit.

I think that building a deep water port in Iqaluit is a superb idea, sure it will cost more than just having rangers plant a flag, but having breakers based from there, is tangible, it is a real government presence, which is needed to legitimize our claim.

(edited to remove a glaring mistake)

Ummm one thing you overlooked is the fact that there is no US Carrier named Montana which is used in the video (The voice says Montana and so does the "supposed" captains hat) not Coral Sea. Also that ship is far from any aircraft carrier I have ever seen in the USN (more like a destroyer). Only submarines these days have "capital" ship names such as states (Montana for instance) here in the US and it has been that way since they removed the state names from the Battleships long long ago before most of you were born. So sorry to break your bubble gentlemen but your video is a fake beyond question. If need be I will provide links as to the proof I offer. Any USN sailor knows that video is fake from the onset. As far as what was released from radio transcripts from the Navy use your own judgment.

In addition the Coral Sea was out of commision in 1991 and scrapped in 1993.
