A lot of cold countries in the top 10.

Oh yeah, when are you going to get that it doesn't matter to me? I won't compromise my values for better living conditions. You don't understand this. You think that by proving how bad Haiti is and how much better Cuba is that I'm going to change my mind. You need to understand that those things aren't that important to me.Originally Posted by thesaint

Australia is a great country to live in, but it would be odd having the seasons in reverse...
The only reason Cuba ranks so highly is because they churn out thousands of doctors every year who end up getting paid less the taxi drivers. Its doing well because it can force people to work cheaply, not because its a fantastic place to live...
if you had to choose, would you rather be a doctor or a taxi driver, your salary being the same ?Originally Posted by Aryan

Besides, have you read the parameters for the HDI rankings ? Your explanation for Cuba's is wrong.
I'd rather not go through the hassle of 6 years of medical school and god knows what else if I could just get the same salary working as a taxi driver...
And how was my explanation wrong? It is pretty straightforward. The HDI index is based on, among other things basic health indicators such as child mortality rates. If America could force all its doctors and nurses to work on half their current salary, they could increase the amount of doctors without increasing the size of the health budget. Not very ethical, but it is effective at making a country more healthier.
Granted there are other factors involved, but the fact of the matter is no one here is going to want to live in a country where u'd get hung by the balls for not liking the leader.

The A.M.A. has us by the balls due to their strict quotas of doctors and medical equipment. This guarentees the doctors and MRI machines will be busy while the patients wait. Have you ever noticed that if you miss an appointment you can still be billed for it yet if the doctor misses your appointment(good reason or not) you are not compensated. The A.M.A holds all the cards and nothing short of a full fledged revolt will change things. There are doctor and nurse shortages in many areas. Not because of lack of qualified people who want to get into those fields, but because of the pitifully few med schools and training centers that will never catch up to demand. Some schools want to increase enrollment but the A.M.A says "Nope. Any unautherized increase will jepordize accreditation.
On the other hand, we are awash in lawyers which creates nightmares for our judicial system.(too many stupid law suits and lawyers wanting to litigate everything into the ground whether it needs to get litigated or not. Their, "I need a new beemer so lets go litigate something" mentality is costing us millions.
I have talked to a few people who escaped cuba. They felt cuba was a great place to live except for one thing. Castro and his political system has to go.
Dang, I must move to São Tomé and Principe!
