Focus groups reported seeing a nude woman and New York’s Twin Towers in the design of Canada’s new $20 polymer bill to be introduced in November 2012. Bank of Canada photo.
    Published: May 8, 2012 at 10:09 AM

OTTAWA, May 8 (UPI) -- Focus groups say Canada's coming new plastic $20 bill has images of a naked woman and New York's World Trade Center towers, CTV News reported.

The bill was introduced by the Bank of Canada last week in Ottawa after weeks of scrutiny by focus groups conducted by the Strategic Counsel across the country, the report said.

Under freedom of information requests, the broadcaster said several people reported seeing at least one naked character in the bill.

"It's too pornographic," a participant in Toronto said. "What is the woman on the top holding?"

Another said, "The naked women are going to offend someone."

Another image shows the World War I Vimy Memorial in France that honors thousands of Canadians who fought and died in the battle that helped turn the tide of the war.

However, many of the focus group participants said they knew nothing about the battle and said it looked more modern.

"I wonder if the monument here could conjure up memories of 9/11 or the Twin Towers," one Toronto participant said.

Numerous others also reported seeing a similarity to the World Trade Center before it was destroyed in a terror attack Sept. 11, 2001.

There was no indication the bill's design would be altered before its November release

The article's phrasing is rather confusing and seems to indicate there are two separate proposed images. In reality, there is a single proposed image, that being the World War I Vimy Memorial in France, dedicated to Canadian troops that fought in the war. Does the memorial have statues of nude women? Yes. Can you see it clearly in the proposed image for the $20 note? Not from what I can tell.

For reference, what the "Woman" (Representing peace) is holding is a torch. While I'm not Canadian, it's a bit more upsetting that people are mistaking a memorial to those whom have given their lives in the line of duty as being "pornographic".

I am having trouble seeing the naked woman though.
But for real, the design is kind of sucky, Queen is ok, I can relate that to the commonwealth,England and the heritage.Leafs also but I can't relate the twin towers and the naked woman to anything. Actually only as the abstract, unity against terrorism and defending the freedom, but I am sure that there are better ways to portray that than this. The design should be clear and simple not ambiguous.

It's a detail thing. On the upper half of the inside of the two "spikes" are eight statues of women, most of them in classic style with bare breasts (i.e. not naked), forming The Chorus.

The topmost one, somewhat discernible on the bill, is the one with the torch - better known as Peace. Opposing her is Justice, below them are Hope, Charity, Honour, Faith, Truth and Knowledge. The last two are set apart from the rest of The Chorus btw, looking ashamedly away from the group.

You have to see these details of The Chorus in the context of wartime and postwar perception of the Bone Mill. They're symbolic.

What exactly does either of that have to do with Vimy?

The two pylons represent Canada and France respectively btw. And that people are offended by Peace is a rather good euphemism for our times.

Ah I see it now, on the other photo though. It appears that my monitor needs to be replaced. What is Vimy?

It's the portrayal of classically styled female figurines on a monument. Whoever thought it's pornographic had watched too much porn.

Ah, than the design is ok. How come that the watch group didn't see the monument and focused only at one part of the monument, the nude figure?

Great way of preventing the religious fundamentalists of using your currency for terrorism.

I would add a naked sheep and a naked goat in there just to be 100% sure. Based on what I've heard how these fundamentalist types are.

Hence the saying "Can't see the forest for the trees".

Considering the desing, it could have been cleaner I guess.

Both have cloven hoofs. That means the devil.

Sheep & goats constitute a form of currency for primitive societies.

Dunno why you want them naked because that is how they are anyway.
