Forgive my civvy ignorance but in live-fires, are you handed loose rounds or are you handed full mags? As you exit a live-fire, do you have to turn in mags or rounds?

I mean, did the guy in question have to reload a mag and put that in a pocket before he was going out to pull a trigger in front of people?

And to reiterate what I and someone else mentioned above, the real problem lies with the chowderhead who okayed the exercise - I assume the world is gonna land on his nuts.

Pointing real guns at real people, blanks or not...

    Sheesh.

Another disturbing thought - what if this had been real? This clown has just managed to take out a bunch of 'good guys', and that was with just one guy using live ammo. Do these blokes just spray it about & hope to hit a baddie?
    The clown fought in Chad.

We are used to countries like Russia managing to kill more civillians than terrorists in these sort of situations, but I though the French were a bit better than that.
Actually they are doing pretty well it's just that no one notices: the regiment was in charge of the protection and the exit of foreigners in N'Djamena when the rebels attacked the capital.

And I don't mention the release of the hostages in Somalia without practically firing a shot. But then these were special forces.

In our army during range firing, the Ammunition NCO hand over the requisite number of rounds for the practice to be fired. The soldier counts it and then puts it into his rifle magazine. This ensures that the Ammunition NCO has given the right amount of rounds and the man is also sure of the number he has got and the number of fired cases he is to account for and return.
