I firmly believe regardless of background you should get a solid public education, something that isn't difficult to get right - the only other option would be for the government to subsidise lower income bracket people's fees to private schools, but even that would produce a very hefty bill and create resentment on the part of those who have to pay.
That's the problem. Our government has managed to screw up every single public service it tries to provide. A higher percentage of our public school teachers have their kids in private schools than regular families. Why is that?

The mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaragosa, was quoted a few years ago when he was running for mayor saying "I will not sacrifice my children in our public school system."

Are you saying there will be NO madrasas if we have public school systems?
Schools of similar quality (where low income people will learn about the six thousand year old earth and man hunting dinosaurs) will be the only option for a good chunk of the population. The "schools" which would go for free would probably "explain" the 6k year earth.

Why do you think those crappy schools are where people in that part of the world learn - because they can't afford to send their kids to real schools. So disbanding the public school system, and telling people to **** themselves, would simply make the educational situation worse as illiteracy would probably go up.

That's cool, they have money, but lots of people could not afford a private school.

And as you are also against welfare some poor people will have the fun of deciding to educate their kids or feed them.

I'm not saying all low income families have big screen TVs. I'm using that as an illustration to frivalous spendings by all Americans, especially those who cannot afford to.
Getting rid of a TV ain't gong to change it the ability of poor people to pay for school.

Getting rid of government aid would also drop things like in state tuition making it harder for people to afford college.

How about this? If you like to provide free education for other people, you can. I don't have kids. I don't want to pay for them. It's a free country. You can choose to pay more.

In fact, there are states with a voluntary "extra" tax system for those giving souls such as yourself. Guess how good that business venture is? People who scream about giving more to the poor did not come crashing through the door trying to pay more taxes.

I said no public education as in no school systems using tax dollars. You can still organize public schools using donations. That's real charity. People in your city, who want to provide free education to the poor, can get together and start your own schools. Are you afraid that only stupid, ignorant, religious people are generous enough to provide free education to the poor? What does that say about smart, well-informed, non-religious people?

If memory holds true, you went to public school.

Yes I did. And look how I turned out.

That can be an endorsement for the public school system or a condemnation.

Either way your parents were well served buying the TV as it wouldn't have made a difference...

I actually watch less and less TV now. There's nothing good. History channel is talking about some lumberjacks. Discovery channel is talking about some fishermen. Sci-fi is playing that worthless show called BSG. And all of them are trying to brainwash me into believing this planet is about to explode from too much CO2.

Excellent. High school graduation rates will indeed increase, since all the potential dropouts would not be able to afford attending high school in the first place. A flawless plan.

I stopped watching TV as well.

The News blows - I actually don't care about Clinton, McCain or Obama. Like I really don't like any of the three.

The History Channel blows - lumberjacks, bible code, conspiracy crap

Discovery channel blows - motorcycles and fishermen

Court TV - worlds stupidest videos

Animal planet sucks - I think it is great we are winning against the animal kingdom the people who run the channel should stop being so god damn defeatist about it. We are on the final stages of victory - ****ing polar bears and baby seals are so ready to wave the white flag. The damn lion lives by our grace. Damn channel wants to make me feel bad for winning a struggle we have been in for thousands of years.

I'm not kidding, the only animals that we need to keep taste good if we can't eat them then dammit they are the enemy .

It will go here to digital cable to make us switch over soon enough. Got rid of the estorgen channel putting it digital; thank god/allah/buddha/Bush for small miracles.

Was a neat program on at 5am a month back on animals we killed off like 10k years ago like huge bears, man eating birds, saber tooth tigers, monster crocs and the like. Made me proud until I realized the writers wanted me to feel bad for us getting rid of them in the time before we had gunpowder.

I don't want to walk outside and get attacked by a twenty foot tall, man eating, flightless ass bird.

That's sounds quite sensible - do many opt for private education in this model?

We have a similar system called Vouchers.

The government gives a voucher worth $$$ to parents (especially those with kids in crappy public schools) and they can put their kids in a private school.

Guess who's against this? All the democrats and especially the teacher's unions.

Graduating from public high school nowadays means nothing. There's so many kids in college who lack basic math, english, science and history knowledge.
