Yes I am because you are one of the few that can help me figure out the nuances of quantum mechanics by being so straightforward and getting on the spot. Hell I understood more about quantum mechanics reading this thread than I ever did before in my lifetime.

    **** sigh ****

Ok, be advised that one course does not a physicist/astronomer me make.

1st of all, the edge of the universe. You cannot reach the end of the universe because by the very virture of you being there, you're expanding space.

2nd, since mass do warp space, then all that mass within the universe curves space.

3rd, time. Now this is somewhat harder to explain. Time is an event. In order for time to exist, something must happen and since light is the fastest thing in the universe, we equate time and light to be same thing. In order for time to start existing, light must have had to occurred. Where light has not gone, there is no time ... because nothing has happened yet.

This will also help explain why some parts of the universe is 18 billions year while others are 12 billions year old ... because light traveled longer in that direction than in the other.

To help explain this, if a tree fell in the forest and you did not see it, has the tree fallen. Well, to you, it has not because you've not seen evidence of it.

BTW, this is still all Einsteinian explanations, not quantum mechanics.

I still think it was Tom Cruise and his "Stepford" wife Katie!

    OOE,

You just explained time dilation to me! Now I got what time dilation is all about! Thanks!

The way I envision the effect of light on time is looking at it like snapshots of an event. Each snapshot is preceded by another but different from each other. Thinking about it, I would say that time is a dimension to measure space rather than as a property. For example, in 2 dimensions, area is a property, in 3d, volume is a property, and in 1d, length/distance is a property. Time has to be a dimension, not a property otherwise how do we measure events by? Like we measure length/distance by the x axis, the height/area by the y axis, the depth/volume by the z axis. So I would say that "events" are a property of time. And by virtue of time, motion such as velocity and acceleration and light are properties of time.

    Just pondering.

    Texas UFO mystery solved

cbs11tv.com - Texas UFO Mystery Solved?

    Texas UFO Mystery Solved?
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ―
The mystery of the Stephenville UFOs might have been solved.

Today the Air Force Reserve said on the night of January 8, ten F-16 fighter jets were conducting training flights in the area. Many of the suspected UFO sightings took place on that night.

Originally, the 301st Fighter Wing at the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base said none of its jets were in the area that night.

In a statement today, a Wing spokesman says they made a mistake and that jets were flying in the Stephenville area that evening.

The Air Force no longer investigates UFOs.

About 200 UFO sightings are reported each month, mostly in California, Colorado and Texas, according to the Mutual UFO Network, which plans to go to the 17,000-resident town of Stephenville to investigate.

Fourteen percent of Americans polled last year by The Associated Press and Ipsos say they have seen a UFO.

UFO sightings have been reported all over the world for centuries, including the infamous 1897 crash of a cigar-shaped object near the tiny Texas town of Aurora. While some thought it was a hoax, decades later investigators from UFO groups said evidence suggests the disfigured pilot's body buried that day was an alien.

In Chicago in late 2006, some United Airlines pilots and other employees reported seeing a saucer-shaped craft hovering over O'Hare Airport before shooting up through the clouds. But federal officials said nothing showed up on the radar and explained it as some type of weather phenomenon.

In 1997, dozens of people saw lights in a V-formation over Phoenix, a mystery that was captured on videotape and spurred calls for a government investigation. A few months later people reported a similar sight over Las Vegas.

One of the most famous cases was the 1947 crash on a ranch near Roswell, N.M. Although the government said it was a top-secret weather balloon, an Army officer who helped recover the debris came forward 30 years later claiming a cover-up, asserting that an alien spacecraft had crashed. Reports later surfaced that a base nurse told someone that autopsies were performed on aliens from the wreckage.

    Well, that was a tease

    Jumping in to annoy here:

I posted a "model" of the concept of expanding spacetime (cribbed from a John Gribbin book) in a thread a while ago. Link here.

    It might help some folks.

Edit: Found an illustrated/animated version here. Pretty neat.

The name of the physicist is Michael Alcubierre (sp?) who was at the time at Cardiff. I believe that the paper was intergral to his post doc thesis. Although the creation of the bubble required more energy than the total conversion of the mass of the observable universe, consequent mathematical investigations have produced exponentially vast reductions in the energy requirements. I think they all still require negative matter (not the same as anti-matter) which would have an energy density greater than ... sorry can't remember. Scientist Chap was a long time ago

The online archive of New Scientist will certainly have related articles as will the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society (JBIS). Happy hunting!
