    Let the Gurkhas come home

Ive just joined here so this is my first post,Apart from my introduction.I was today saddened to hear that some two thousand or so gurkhas have been told that they cannot come to this country to live the rest of their lives,The country they have fought for. Also about five hundred of the soldiers have been awarded military honours,I just feel in these times when any tom dick and harry can enter the country,Well its just unfair isnt it,Surely they deserve the right to come to live here.I bet the government see the fact that these soldiers are unable to work ,Therefore they wouldnt be contributing to the economy,And this is probarbly why they have been denied entry,What do you think?

Welcome Joinebee, and you are absolutely spot on with your obsevations, and I agree totally, there is another thread on here, re a Gurkha having won the Victoria Cross in WW2 was initially refused entry to this country to live out his remaining years, I am glad to say that the government, or whatever penny pinching office that originally blocked him, has since seen sense, no doubt influenced by the weight of oppostion they recieved from a very large number of people, and I would like to see it as a moral victory, On behaf of all the RIGHT minded peolpe in this country, and hopefully the world, who belive in doing the RIGHT thing

Reminds me of the ANC treatment of the ex-32 Battalion soldiers.

Oh this is priceless. Don't allow those who have served Britain with honor and dilligence back in, but allow every Moslem from Timbuktu to Pakistan in so they can blow buses and subways. Even though that what I just was a rant, it speaks the truth.

You would think most Britain's would be honored to have them as a neighbor. I would.
Things like this happen way to often to warriors of all nations. This news dose nothing for my opinion of bureaucrats. I have thought on these situations and they have helped me to understand what great depths there are to the phrase self sacrifice.
    I wish it wasn't so.
Are there really any true rewards for a warrior other then self esteem, camaraderie, and victory or glory?

These are some of the most loyal and courageous soldiers which bring great honour to the armies they serve in and not ask much in return. Hats off to the Gurkhas!

Because the after effects of war wont get politicians reelected, no one wants a crippled ex serviceman next to him on the political battle bus, they become an embarrasment and thats the sad fact

Because they themselves are not at the front in danger. They're getting paid £100.000 min and make sure their kids don't join up.

Why should they care now their elected? We can beat are heads against walls all day and never understand the small minded people who "we" placed in "Power" and in our name. Once again another petition will be signed, and at the end of the day these guys WILL get into the Country

    My humble twopence worth

This news disgusts me to the very core. That a nations government for any reason could so cruelly and blatantly betray and backstab loyal and faithful soldiers flies in the face of everything that these troops and indeed proper soldiers anywhere hold dear and that is honor. The Gurkhas in the past won the respect and admiration of the british troops they resisted and so in time became part of the empires armies. Their tradition of dogged determination has been visible in every skirmish, battle and war in which they have ever engaged and none can dispute their unwavering loayalty. This is a horrific and unforgivable betrayal.
P.S. I have had the honor of seeing the Gurkhas in action on a series of training exercises in the jungle some time ago and know full well how good they are and how such warriors ought be treated.

Oh this is not meant to be a stab at the british people but rather at their governing body and particularly at the section of it responsible for this travesty.
they have us surrounded, the poor bastards.

OK guys, now for Question #2.
Most goverments are a reflection of the people they govern over. For democracies, the people get the goverment they vote for. Why do the people vote into office the type of people who treat veterans poorly and what does ultimately this say about the voters. ie, us? We can point fingers at the polititions all day long, but the facts are that we are the people that put them into office knowing full well what these polititions would do.

Ah, but we don't know what they will do in a case like this. We don't really know what they will do anyway, as political promises before an election seem to be made to be broken.I remember Prime Minister Harold Wilson (one of the slimiest eels ever) saying "A week is a long time in politics". He said this a week after making a promise which he reneged on. No wonder time-share touts are held in greater esteem than most politicos!

Lets be honest you vote for whoever is going to improve your quality of life, can`t say I have ever heard a politician, during a campaign spout on about Soldiers welfare, as part of his parties manifesto, they tell us what we want to hear, to get themselves elected and only then do we all pay the price

I think we are supposed to vote for those having the nations good at heart. Now people seem to think it is about which party is going to do best for them personally . No wonder we get confused.
