    China slams US piracy complaint

    China slams US piracy complaint

China has criticised the US over its decision to file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization over copyright piracy and counterfeiting.

The US says that China's failure to enforce copyright laws is costing software, music and book publishers billions of dollars in lost sales.

The US also argues that China makes it hard for legitimate firms to operate.

China "expressed great regret and strong dissatisfaction at the decision", the state news agency said.

The Xinhua news agency quoted Intellectual Property Office commissioner Tian Lipu as saying that it was "not a sensible move for the US government to file such a complaint" at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"By doing so, the US has ignored the Chinese government's immense efforts and great achievements in strengthening intellectual property rights protection and tightening enforcement of its copyright laws," the commissioner added.

On Monday, the US trade representative Susan Schwab said that piracy and counterfeiting levels in China remained unacceptably high.

The US said that despite China's promises to crackdown on fake software, DVDs, luxury goods, car parts and shoes, many of the goods were still widely available throughout the country.

The US has been threatening a WTO complaint against China since 2005.

It is correct a surmise that there is unchecked piracy and counterfeiting going on China.

Many pirated software from China are available in the Indian grey market!

However, it does not mean that the pirated stuff is first class. They have many glitches and so one wonders if it is worth buying them and yet the price of the originals are so exorbitant for third world average person that this grey market works to the detriment of the actual producers whose stuff is being copied.

    ROFLMAO, China complaining !!!.

Most of the Hollywood movies are available in the Chinese market, even before they are in the Theaters !!. Many 'fakes' are sold as real, which can be extremely dangerous depending on the product.

In the long run this culture of not respecting IPR will haunt China.

actually, china has tried pretty hard to crack down on IPR violations. however, the inherent weakness of the current-day legal system makes it difficult to properly prosecute violations.

the other way, as the chinese (more than) occasionally resort to, is extralegal measures. would you prefer that?

ironically it is introduction of the free-market that has led to the explosion of this type of behavior. taiwan had the same problem in the 60s and 70s.
The human mind cannot grasp the causes of phenomena in the aggregate. But the need to find these causes is inherent in man’s soul. And the human intellect, without investigating the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions of phenomena, any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, snatches at the first, the most intelligible approximation to a cause, and says: “This is the cause!"

China has got all the time it needed to deal with the issue. They have turned a blind eye towards that. I think US is doing what it was compelled to do. But, I dont understand what WTO can really do with it. What is US expecting from this tussle? Symbolic stuff like a slap on china's wrist or anything more concrete?
