Muslim executed for trying to "split" China

Muslim executed for trying to "split" China

By Benjamin Kang Lim Fri Feb 9, 2:18 AM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has executed a Uighur activist in a far-northwestern city for attempting to "split the motherland" and possessing explosives, drawing condemnation from a human rights group which said the evidence was insufficient.

Ismail Semed, who was deported to China from Pakistan in 2003, had told the court a confession had been coerced, but he was executed nevertheless on Thursday in Urumqi, capital of the predominantly Muslim region of Xinjiang, Radio Free Asia on Friday quoted his widow, Buhejer, as saying.

"When the body was transferred to us at the cemetery I saw only one bullet hole in his heart," Buhejer told the U.S. government-funded radio.

The exile group, the World Uighur Congress, said the prosecution had presented no credible evidence for a conviction.

"His trial, like most Uighur political prisoners' trials, was not fair," it said in an emailed statement.

A spokeswoman for the Urumqi Intermediate People's Court said a group of people had been executed on Thursday but said she had no knowledge of specific cases. The Xinjiang regional government declined to comment.

Turkic-speaking Muslim Uighurs account for 8 million of the 19 million people in Xinjiang.

The radio said the charge of attempting to split the motherland stemmed from the allegation that Semed was a founding member of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, outlawed by Beijing as a terrorist group.

But Nicholas Bequelin, Hong Kong-based China researcher of Human Rights Watch, said: "The death penalty was widely disproportionate to the alleged crimes ... his trial did not meet minimum requirements of fairness and due process."

"We don't think there was sufficient evidence to condemn him," Bequelin added.

China has waged a harsh campaign in recent years against what it says are violent separatists and Islamic extremists struggling to set up an independent "East Turkestan" in Xinjiang, which shares a border with
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia.

Buhejer met her husband briefly on Monday shortly after being informed of the decision to execute him, RFA said.

"(It was) only for 10 minutes" that they were allowed to meet, she was quoted as saying.

He told her to "take care of our children and let them get a good education." The couple has a young son and daughter.

Semed had previously served two prison sentences for taking part in a violent uprising in 1990. He fled to Pakistan after a Chinese government crackdown in 1997.

Two other Uighurs who testified against Semed were also executed, RFA quoted unnamed sources in the region as saying.

In a reference to another case currently in court in Urumqi, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Thursday Canadian diplomats had no right to be present at the hearing of Hussayin Celil, a Uighur accused by China of terrorism who was awarded Canadian citizenship two years ago.

Celil, also known as Yu Shanjiang, fled China in the 1990s and travelled last year to Uzbekistan, where he was detained and then extradited to China on terrorism charges.

He was cited in court documents related to Semed as a co-conspirator, Bequelin told Reuters. China has not recognised Celil's Canadian citizenship, obtained in 2005.

China's strongarm actions keeps terrorism and insurgency at bay.

It is obvious that China values territorial integrity at all cost and does not care for either world opinion or human rights.

While the whole world suffers because of all the PC and human rights issues,
China does not since she couldn't care less.

Should the world continue being plagued by terrorists because of being sensitive to the issue of human rights or should they borrow a leaf from China?

at some point, strong-arm tactics backfire. we saw this in the iran of the shah and to a point in egypt of today (with the muslim brotherhood).

the reason why it is not worse in china is because, combined with these strong-arm tactics, china has a rapidly growing economy, strict laws (look at the recent Tibet Autonomous Region Implementing Measures), and also- hard to believe, but it's true- some bending over!

The human mind cannot grasp the causes of phenomena in the aggregate. But the need to find these causes is inherent in man’s soul. And the human intellect, without investigating the multiplicity and complexity of the conditions of phenomena, any one of which taken separately may seem to be the cause, snatches at the first, the most intelligible approximation to a cause, and says: “This is the cause!"

The Year of the Pig begins on February 18.

    What will they call it?

    The Year of the Porcupine?

That would be appropriate since pigs is a favourite in Chinese cuisine and Chinese will surely 'pine for the pork' if pigs are not allowed!

    China braces for baby boom
    DAVID EIMER

Beijing, Feb. 11: When the clock reaches midnight on February 17 and the Chinese New Year begins, so will a baby boom that threatens to overwhelm the country’s overstretched healthcare system.

The following 12 months will be known as the Year of the Pig, during which anyone born is supposed to be easy-going and lucky. But, for the first time in six decades, it will also coincide with the year in which the element of gold passes through the Chinese zodiac — and babies born in the Year of the Golden Pig are twice blessed.

The promising celestial combination has led hundreds of thousands of couples to 2007 as the year to have the sole baby they are permitted under China’s rigid one-child policy, in the hope that their offspring will have double the normal entitlement to riches and a long life. In Beijing alone, 150,000 babies are expected this year, up from the 129,000 born in 2006.

With just 3,800 beds in Beijing’s maternity wards and only 3,000 doctors and nurses available to work in them, the fear is that the capital will be unable to cope with the number of births.

At the Beijing Obstetrics and Gynaecology Hospital, the lobby was jammed with expectant mothers and their anxious husbands. The hospital is seeing 700 women a day, more than twice the usual.

“We started queuing at 7.15 am to get a ticket for an appointment with the doctor in the afternoon,” said Liu Li, whose wife is eight months pregnant. “Of course it’s good for our daughter to be born in the Year of the Pig. I think everyone here is excited about having a gold pig baby.”

Under the Chinese zodiac, one of 12 animals is assigned to each year. People can be a rat, ox, tiger, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, rabbit, dog or pig.

The PIG is auspicious to the Chinese and so I learn.

Are you a Chinese? I mean a Han.

If so, tell me that this is not true!

Has pig breeding also been stopped in deference to the Moslems?

Have pigs been taken out from the Chinese staple?

    So Icecho, get real.

WAB is not a Communist propaganda site or a PC site!

Here you tell it as it is!

They don't watch the Chinese eating pigs, which is their staple?

There is nothing wrong or being a Communist in Communist China. In fact, it is a plus point!

It is a plus point in my State!

I see you are flying the Taiwanese flag, but internal matter of Communist China is the external matter of Taiwan!

If the Communists can suppress the Uighurs, then what is the big deal about some pigs?

In response to my post, your post conveys no meaning or may I have not understood.

The Chinese speak not one language.

The traditionally recognized seven main groups, in order of population size are:

    1. Mandarin (c. 800 million), not to be confused with Putonghua / Guoyu, often also called "Mandarin".

    2. Wu. which includes Shanghainese, (c. 90 million)

    3. Cantonese (c. 80 million)

    4. Min which includes Taiwanese, (c. 50 million)

    5. Hakka (c. 35 million)

    6. Xiang (c. 35 million)

    7. Gan (c. 20 million)

Chinese linguists have recently distinguished 3 more groups from the traditional seven:

    1. Jin from Mandarin

    2. Hui from Wu

    3. Ping partly from Cantonese

There are many variants of spoken Chinese which are different enough to be mutually incomprehensible.

I have lost my notes on the Chinese languages and the dialects or else I could have given more details.
