В ходе визита в Россию главы эритрейского МИД Али Саида Абдуллы были проведены переговоры о расширении поставок российского вооружения в эту африканскую страну. По информации газеты "Коммерсант", стороны заключили контракт на поставку Эритрее 80 противотанковых ракетных комплексов "Корнет-Э" на сумму 165 тысяч долларов. Кроме того, Россия поможет эритрейским военным модернизировать поставленные ранее боевые самолеты.
Между тем, Эритрея вновь находится на гране войны с Эфиопией, которой Россия также активно поставляет оружие еще с советских времен. Предметом конфликта стал пограничный спор. В декабре прошлого года Эфиопия начала стягивать к границе войска, сосредоточив там 48-тысячную группировку. В марте руководство миротворческой миссии ООН сообщило Кофи Аннану о тревожной активности в районе концентрации эфиопских войск и предупредило, что в регионе в любой момент могут начаться боевые действия.

Эритрея отделилась от Эфиопии в 1993 году. Хотя обе страны населяют родственные народы, говорящие на семитских языках, но если эфиопы преимущественно христиане, то жители Эритреи в большинстве своем исповедуют ислам. Кроме того, после объявления Эритреей независимости, Эфиопия лишилась выхода к портам на Красном море, через которые во многом осуществлялись экспортно-импортные операции.

В 1998-2000 годах между обеими странами произошел кровопролитный конфликт, едва не завершившийся оккупацией Эритреи эфиопскими войсками. Только вмешательство ООН помогло прекратить войну. На время боевых действий было введено международное эмбарго на поставку вооружений в эти страны, которое было снято в 2001 году.

За последнее десятилетие Россия поставила в Эритрею вертолеты Ми-24 и Ми-17, самолеты МиГ-29 и ПЗРК "Игла". Эфиопия также закупила у России вертолеты Ми-17, Ми-24 и Ми-35 и самоходные артиллерийские установки 2С5. Однако в Аддис-Абэбе предпочли МиГам "сушки". Более легкие и маневренные Су-27 доказали свое превосходство над эритрейскими МиГами в ходе конфликта. При этом, по некоторым данным, в составе эфиопских ВВС воевали российские наемники, а на эритрейских самолетах летали летчики из какой-то другой страны СНГ, предположительно с Украины.

Следует заметить, что это уже не первый опыт поддержки Россией двух воюющих сторон. Во время вооруженного конфликта между той же Эфиопией и Сомали в 1970-80х годах Советский Союз осуществлял поставки оружия обеим странам, а советские военные советники находились при штабах противоборствующих армий.

But back to the topic....

Ethiopia and Eritrea having been having at it for a long time. Eritrea was part of Ethiopia until about the late 1980s. Then they had a war in the 1990s. People made a quick buck selling to both. Russia, the Ukraine and other ex WP/CIS people (along with another nation) made money selling to both. Italy sold only to Eritrea and we gave Ethiopia a few C-130s.

They actually got pissed at one nation who referbed MiG-21s for Ethiopia and sold naval equipment and other stuff to Eritrea at the same time.

Ethiopia got Flankers (Su-27S/UB) from Russia and Eritrea got MiG-29A/UBs from the Ukraine and later attirtion models from Russia. Hell Russian brokers were making money selling tanks and helicopters to both sides. Bloody war but Ethiopia won in the end. People watched as the Su-27 beat the MiG-29 in combat killing exports on new build MiG-29s all the more.

Since then Eritrea has picked up Su-27S/UBs and rebuilt their air force and army and Ethiopia seems to have had some purges.

Africa is were merchants of death make a killing...
