She is a fine looking ship.
I have a question about the hardware used on her. I notice in the photos the use of standard head fasteners on the control console. I was wondering is this normal for navel vessels? I personally prefer Phillips head on my very small boat and was of the opinion that standard head were hard to use in rough water.

And in a bow to gender correctness, the Shivalik is India’s first warship with a cabin specially built for women officers. While similar in most respects to the men’s cabins, I was pointed out two significant differences: the ladies’ cabin has an attached bathroom, and also extra wardrobe space! I also noted that it was located right next to the Captain’s cabin.

Thanks for the link, it was a very good read. The INS Shivalik looks beautiful and is one versatile ship!

How large is the Shivalik in displacement tonnage, and how does its size compare to frigates in the US, Russian & Chinese navies?

Approximately 58 days (of course it's less now) as stated by Col Shukla, subject to acquiring the appropriate engines.

Ah, the benefits of a growing budget

The shipyards (both civilian & military) are rapidly progressing up the value chain, good stuff. I hope they are increasing capacity as well to match demand, don't want a huge order backlog, especially of warships!

    Talk about strategic placement !!

I wonder if they are planning any air defense ddgs or cruisers for the IAC's battlegroup.

I think cruisers are not in IN's shopping list though better air defense should be a matter of concern.

Its nothing like the huge capability on the Korean/Japanese/USN ships, the Kolkata class (project 15A) will have a decent air defence capability with the Barak-8 for medium range and barak missile for point defence with MF-STAR (S-band solid-state active phased array radar).

No real air threat from the Regional Naval powers.

A recent drawing from a journalists blog

    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_44d3OT-xI3...-class+DDG.jpg

Four follow on destroyers to the Kolkata class under project 15B will be more advanced, possibly concentrating more on anti air element if the situation in the region changes, until then a multi-role capability is exactly what is needed.

^^^^ Yes the P-15A is a deadly beauty! It will give IN an edge over its enemies. But Govt already sanctioned the P-15A with full stealth, long range LACM and other new generation weapons and sensors!

The actual number of ships ordered/under-construction for next 6 years ie by 2015......

[IN THE PIPELINE: WARSHIPs BEING BUILT IN INDIA]

Kochi shipyard : Indigenous aircraft carrier (1 more 65000 ton carrier ie IAC-2)

Mazagon Dock, : Project 17 : Three Shivalik class frigates (7 more P-17A FFG)
Mumbai Project 15-A : Three Kolkata class destroyers (4 more P-15B DDG)
Project Scorpene : Six Scorpene submarines (6 more SSK)

Garden Reach : Project 28 : Four anti-submarine corvettes (total number ordered is 12)
Shipyard, Kolkata Ten fast attack craft
Two Landing ships for amphibious warfare

Goa Shipyard : Three OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vessels)

Private yards : Six survey vessels

Hindustan Shipyard : Total 5 SSN/SSBN/SSGN orederd. 1 being built 2 more under construction.

But still I will say that India's defence build-up is very very slow but high tech and up-to-date.

No. It is a technology demonstrator and still under development. But it will be used in future smaller vessels like corvettes, smaller frigates. It also helped to gain knowhow for development of future higher rated engines for FFGs and DDGs.
