There is alot rumor going on regarding to Shen's transferrer right now in Taiwan.

* A low level speaker (PC of a MR) stated very early that PLA wants nothing to do with this, it is a calculated move, because if CMC wants to get involve at a later date, it can discredit the initial statement as a rouge PC shot off more then he know. Standard procedure.

* There is photos of tracked APC in the street is most interesting -- given most of the heavily armed PAP are stationed in Xinjiang and the fact their Aug 1st insignia and vehicle ID number were covered up by newspapers, which suggested they were transferred from the army. The only formation equipped such APC within Tibet MD is the 52nd Mountain Brigade, one of the finest outfit of the PLA, (53rd brigade is not so up-to-date) if, and big if, PLA borrowed heavy eq from the best outfit from the PLA, chance are, CMC is not worry about a military interventions from India.

* As I posted in the ROC military thread in WAB, it has been confirmed that there is no PLA troop movement ahead of the Taiwan election. Clearly, the leadership does anything that will impact Ma's chance to win for the KMT.

* Yet, Chengdu MR, which Tibet MD belongs to did conducted a night time mobilization ex and reported in CCTV4 and PLAdaily, that means PLA clearly wants to be a player, but not in a direct role. as normal mobilization ex don't get this time of media cover.


* During the height of the protest, the 17 congress is still in session and in fact most of the senior leader is in Beijing for that session, thus, if the president wants to issue a "legal" order, he can. And, in fact, Hu was the one who conducted the 1989 crack down. But no order was given.

How can one under-est US?



Here is what I am talking about, if I was not clear earlier. For Taiwan election, US is parking two AC carriers right outside of China, There were high level of visits by Candy Rice and other high ranking officals including the commander of PACCOM last month to make sure there is no mis-communications and the PLA draw back from their positions.

But when it come to this current protest, US told China to play nice and there is no high level communications between US/China regarding to the riot.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. aircraft carriers, including the USS Kitty Hawk, have been sent to the Taiwan region for training exercises during this weekend's Taiwanese election, a U.S. defense official said on Wednesday.

The two warships were "responsibly positioned" in the Pacific Ocean somewhere east of Taiwan and would remain in place through Saturday's presidential election and referendum on U.N. membership, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He declined to elaborate on the positions of the two ships and could identify only the Kitty Hawk by name.

China has claimed sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan since 1949, when Mao Zedong's Communists won the Chinese civil war and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists fled to the island.

Beijing has vowed to bring Taiwan under its rule by force if necessary.

The Kitty Hawk has approached Taiwan before previous elections to discourage any military action from China, which lies about 99 miles northwest of the island.

"We feel we are responsibly positioned at this time," the defense official told Reuters, saying the two carriers were not near enough to the island to provoke China but would be able to "respond if there's a provocative situation."

Navy officials said the Kitty Hawk left its base in Japan en route to Hawaii on Tuesday and would continue on to the U.S. mainland later for decommissioning.

The protests have spread but not the rebellion. There are no riots outside of Tibet and I strongly doubt that there would be. Outside of Tibet, the three provinces with sizeable Tibetan populations have them in the minority. While the Tibetans inside Tibet may feel brave enough to burn down Han-Chinese shops because they outnumber the Han-Chinese 10 to 1, when the opposite is true, it's a really bad idea.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and 25 other Nobel laureates on Thursday condemned the Chinese government's violent crackdown on Tibetan protesters and called on Beijing to exercise restraint.

''We protest the unwarranted campaign waged by the Chinese government against our fellow Nobel laureate, His Holiness the Dalai Lama,'' the group said in a statement released by Wiesel.

Wiesel told The Associated Press that the group wanted renewed negotiations between China and the Dalai Lama, who won the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize.

''The latest events are dramatic and the main thing is to stop the present oppression, persecution and violence,'' Wiesel said.

''I don't understand the Chinese hierarchy there,'' he added. ''Why are they afraid of Tibet?''

Led by Buddhist monks, protests had begun peacefully in Lhasa early last week but erupted into rioting on March 14, drawing a harsh response from Chinese authorities.

The crackdown drew worldwide attention to China's human rights record, threatening to overshadow Beijing's attempts to project an image of unity and prosperity in the lead-up to the Aug. 8-24 Olympics.

Wiesel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, said he is close friends with the Dalai Lama and that the Tibetan leader has repeatedly said he is not asking for a sovereign independent Tibet. ''All he wants is religious and cultural autonomy,'' Wiesel said.

That autonomy, the statement said, ''is fundamental to the preservation of the ancient Tibetan heritage.''

When asked what he would do if the Chinese did not agree to talks, Wiesel said: ''If they don't agree and the violence goes on we will have to ask for more, maybe the reconsideration of the Olympics ... but we are not there yet.''

Wiesel said it was not the time for the international community to take actions such as boycotts. But he said pressure for peace and dialogue is needed until we ''hear reports from the Tibetan themselves that all has been restored and the prisons are opened.''

Tibetan exile groups have claimed that 80 people were killed during the protest and its aftermath, while Beijing maintains that 16 died and more than 300 were injured.
