well, I'm sure ROCAF would be busy fighting on the other side. We can get in a debate on how much force ROCAF have to launch against blocking PLAN ships, but that will probably never end.
What happens the first time a Chinese ship stops or sinks an American merchant vessel?

Even without that, in order to enforce a blockade or support an invasion, it isn't enough for the Chinese to contest the airspace. China has to dominate the air, and it doesn't have the capability to do that.

Old news

Friday, February 1, 2008
By Dimitri Bruyas, The China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A spokesperson for opposition Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou produced yesterday one of Ma's old passports, demonstrating that the presidential hopeful did apply for visas while visiting the U.S. in the early 1990s.

The spokesperson made the comments that afternoon in response to ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Frank Hsieh's sustained accusations that Ma has held a U.S. green card until recently.

After biding his time for two days, Hsieh unveiled that morning the number of Ma's alleged green card -- A XXX30786 -- stressing that the aforesaid card is still valid.

He further accused Ma Ying-jeou of travelling at least once a year to the U.S. in order to extend the validity of the precious document, while concealing the true nature of his annual visits to former President Chiang Ching-kuo.

Ma Ying-jeou returned to Taiwan in 1981 to teach law and work as one of former President Chiang Ching-kuo's personal translators after seven consecutive years of study in the United States.

"The validity of a green card is based on U.S. laws, not on Frank Hsieh's interpretation of the laws," said Wang Yu-chi, campaign spokesperson for Ma Ying-jeou, stressing that Hsieh is a lawyer by training.

Yu provided one of Ma's old passports to support his argument. The document clearly shows that between November 1992 and February 1994, or for 15 months, Ma Ying-jeou did not enter the United States.

The same document also displays U.S. immigration officials' seals marking Ma's entry or exit from the United States.

"If (a green card holder) stays out of the U.S. for more than a year, the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) takes the position that residency has been abandoned," Wang read out loud from an excerpt of the U.S. law guiding regulations on "Permanent Resident Status."

Meanwhile, an official from the American Institute in Taiwan said that afternoon that a green card's number is assigned by U.S. authorities for life, and it applies to all official documents submitted by the concerned parties, namely applying for permanent residency, U.S. citizenship or a U.S. passport.

He added that the existence of a green card's number, and the validity of a green card, are two different things.

this is interesting. If you are attempting to enforce a blockade. How would you stop foreign ships from reaching there if you don't want to sink them? stopping vs sinking, big difference.

I would say China will dominate the air.

If you want to stop ships you can threaten to sink them... still an act of war. You could board them... act of war. Pretty much any blockade of Taiwan without declared American neutrality is going to be taken apart.

How? China's airforce doesn't have much range, nor is it particularly advanced.

well, I'm asking you. What have other countries in the history done to avoid sinking ships in a blockade?

This has been debated to death on DT. There are enough people who don't like me on this board that I don't want to actually go through with it again on this thread.

Each of what I've said... both of which are acts of war. Now historically, weak neutral nations have ignored their merchant marine being boarded and seized by a blockading force (an example of this is the Dutch during the wars between the French and the British)... however the United States has a history of supporting Taiwan, and a naval power greater than everyone else in the world... combined.

Alright, I'm just saying that China doesn't have the legs to dominate the air over Taiwan... contest it, certainly... complete aerial dominance is pretty clearly beyond them.

how about pressuring the parties involved in such? For example, if they come, then their business in China would be severely hampered or something like that?

Also to Xinhui, maybe you should tell Crobato to stop taking drugs too, since we stand together on this issue.

Crobato is speaking off the side adjacent to the Mainland, NOT into the Pacific Ocean. Stop taking drugs.

Don't Hong Kong Chinese and Greeks own a pretty significant portion of world's merchant marine? Or is it an urban legend? Add to that most large corporations now flag their ships under dummy names in countries like Liberia, Saint Kitts etc. - a known fact. A modern Captain Jenkins has to be a lot more creative these days, if he is to plead before the US Congress

And the Commander, a Vietnam Vet, just shot down the entire PLAAF air superiority nonsense. Crobato is a great tech guy. Doctrine wise, not so good.

The Commander is echoing what I've been saying for yeas. The PLAAF has never flown beyond the sight of land. Until they do so in numbers, I have absolutely no confidence that they won't be swimming with the fish, not because the RoCAF is that good, but because they will get lost.

The Republic of China Air Force. The People's Republic of China (PRC) is the Communist controlled Mainland China - the China that we all know. The Republic of China (RoC) for intents and purposes is Taiwan though both governments claim rulership of all of China.
