Ivory Coast attacks UN: France Seeks Sanctions

France's UN resolution seeks arms embargo vs Ivory Coast

Updated 08:21am (Mla time) Nov 08, 2004
Agence France-Presse

UNITED NATIONS -- France circulated Sunday a UN draft resolution calling for an arms embargo against Ivory Coast, as well as financial sanctions and a travel ban against individuals accused of threatening the peace process in the conflict-wracked west African nation.
France introduced the measure after nine French soldiers were killed when two Ivorian warplanes raided a French encampment in the rebel-held town of Bouake, prompting Paris to order the destruction of the warplanes and three attack helicopter, effectively destroying Ivory Coast's small air force.

France's retaliation led to anti-French violence in the main city Abidjan.

Ivory Coast accuses France of shooting civilians
By Africa correspondent Sally Sara

The Government of the Ivory Coast is planning to take legal action against French troops accused of shooting civilians.

The Ivorian Government is taking its case to the International Court of Justice.

Ivory Coast accused French troops of killing up to 60 people during an anti-French demonstration in the commercial capital, Abidjan, last week.

Human Rights Minister Victorine Wodie says the perpetrators must be punished.

But France says its soldiers were not responsible for the killings.

The Ivorian Government says it is preparing to lodge its case with the International Court of Justice.

It is also seeking compensation from France for the destruction of its air force.

French troops blew up several Ivorian fighter aircraft and helicopters after nine French peacekeepers were killed in an air raid in the rebel city of Bouake.

Let them go to the ICJ or the UN or even to God.

They should realise that the country that they will complain gainst is beyond the purview of God!
