Besides the immediate prompt given by the North Koreans, I think Japan's remilitarization was inevitable simply on demographic and cultural grounds.

The generation who were adults during the last world war and reconstruction are now almost all dead. The cultural effects of the war on the Japanese people as a whole were bound to wear away with their passing.

I believe a similar phenomenon will eventually occur in the West, as the generations who lived through Cold War die off. As a result, the cultural taboo associated with nuclear weapons will subside, resulting in a more aggressive power-politics than those generations would have been inclined to pursue.

On my own opinion, all of this transformations of Japan's military is basically resulted on the emergence of its neighbor's that arming and upgrading their armies..

Stupidity, pure and simple. I bet if that PLA Mech Division lands on their turf they'll change their tune, at which point the JMSDF will become a massive obstacle to the PLA-N.
And, as I said, they can count on no help from us, and likely most of the 'hood, due to our dependency upon Chinese trade for our economic stability.

remember, Taiwan was held by Japan for even longer than the mainland. They suffered Japanese atrocities even longer than Mainland. Same with Korea.
