Palestinian Authority declares 'Emergency'

Jerusalem, Oct. 2. (PTI): A state of emergency has been declared by the Palestinian Authority as the latest onslaught by Israeli Defence Forces left over 50 Palestinians dead and more than 100 injured.

The Palestinian leadership held an emergency meeting at Yasser Arafat's Ramallah based headquarters where the PA Chairman demanded an immediate end to the "monstrous, criminal and inhumane attacks" by Israel on the people.

"I call on the entire world to act immediately... to stop the racist and criminal (attacks)," he said.

Residents of the West Bank and Gaza have declared a general commercial strike as the cabinet was busy chalking out strategy to deal with the mounting Israeli offensive.

Four Palestinian militants from the Hamas and Al-Aqsa Brigades, affiliated to Arafat's Fatah, carrying Kalashnikov rifles were shot dead today by Israeli forces when they crossed the Israeli border with Gaza near the Nahal Oz area in the western Negev, the Israeli army said.

The militants had crossed a security fence under thick fog, it said.

Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction has called for the sacking of Prime Minister, Ahmed Qurei, for taking a trip to Jordan during the Israeli raids.

Qurei is said to have cancelled a planned trip to Russia following volatile protests.

If they had declared a state of emergency and removed the terrorists instead, this wouldn't be happening. My prayers are with the innocent, on both sides, and the Israeli troops.

He may even miscalculate and slide these weapons off to terrorist groups to invite them to be a surrogate to use them against the United States. It’s the miscalculation that poses the greatest threat-John Kerry
