SYDNEY - Australia's military is looking to recruit foreign troops, particularly those let go in Britain where the government has announced cutbacks on defense spending, according to a Dec. 27 report.

The Australian Defence Force has struggled to fill recruitment quotas and was seeking highly skilled specialists such as fighter pilots and submarine crews from overseas, The Australian newspaper said.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) recently sent a delegation to Britain to look into the possibility of recruiting recently retrenched sailors, it added.

The Australian Defence Force, which is facing competition for personnel - particularly engineers - due to the nation's lucrative mining boom, confirmed that talks had taken place with British officials.

"The Royal Australian Navy has been in talks with the Royal Navy about this possibility and that obviously will depend on those personnel meeting the Royal Australian Navy's requirements," a spokesman told Agence France-Presse.

He did not comment on whether the military, which has some 1,550 troops in Afghanistan, was prepared to fast-track Australian citizenship for foreign recruits, as reported by The Australian.

The development comes after British Prime Minister David Cameron unveiled 8 percent cuts to the armed forces budget and set out plans to reduce the size of the Royal Army, Navy and Air Force by 17,000 troops.

The report in The Australian said Australian Navy chief Ray Griggs assured his British counterpart that Canberra would not recruit personnel the British needed to maintain their capabilities.

The Australian Defence Force was also looking to other western countries, including the United States, Canada and New Zealand, to build up personnel, particularly for its submarine crews, the newspaper said.

On its website, the Australian Defence Force says it "looks to overseas candidates to fill gaps in our services that can't currently be satisfied by standard recruitment."

It said its Navy recruitment program was aimed at "serving or immediately ex-serving officers and sailors of foreign naval forces [not greater than three years since separation from military service] with specific qualifications and/or experience that is directly transferable to the RAN."

Nah, we'll steal from anyone with a 'compatible' military. Been doing it for years, especially from the Brits. Because of our longstanding links with their military - hell, we were effectively part of it for half our existence - There have always been more than a few brits wandering around the ranks of the ADF. With British forces gradually downsizing since the end of the Cold War we have periodically taken advantage & gone on recruiting drives. Ever since the Empire shrank this is tghe best chance most of them will have to live out their days in a sunny climate.

Those of our airforce personel capable of flying a fighter move to Australia, our army is as the Colonel once pointed out a specialist unit of the Australian army, our navy the same at the frigate and MRV level and our SAS regularly use Australian, British, Canadian and sometimes American uniforms.
Effectively apart from coastal patrol and search and rescue we already are Australian

We actively encourage our Scottish bretheren to bring their bagpipes. It allows them to continue a fine tradition from the British army - using the piper to draw the fire of the enemy. Since the first reaction of most sane folk when a man is walking toward them playing bagpipes is to reach for a gun & keep firing until out of ammo pipers have, at a high personal cost, saved countless thousands of British lives. FOUndation on which imperial expansion was built really. Happy to have them.

Kilts are an entirely differnt matter. We prefer our soldiers to wear underwear as part of their uniform at ALL times. In fact, we insist. RSMs with mirrors checking that dress code is adhered to is one tradition we were happy to leave in merry olde England.

The Aussies are looking to bolster their sub force recruitment from experienced European ranks. I saw this a few days ago on the wire.

    »Australian Navy targets UK recruits
The Australian navy is planning to recruit up to 1,000 Royal Navy sailors facing redundancy under the latest defence cuts.

The Royal Australian Navy is planning to visit the UK and evaluate whether it is feasible to recruit some of the 5,000 Royal Navy personnel due to lose their jobs over the next four years. There are a number of emigration shows due to take place in the UK in the next two months, including the market leading Down Under Live shows in London, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Australian navy wants to speak directly to sailors facing redundancy directly to offer them “career transition options”.

A report on maintenance in Australia’s navy suggested that as many as 200 engineers are needed to rebuild lost expertise.

The paper reports the department also is looking for defence specialists, such as fighter pilots, submarine crews and officers and are offering fast-tracked Australian citizenship as an incentive.

Looking for a job in Australia ? Come to Down Under Live in London (11th & 12th February), Edinburgh (18th & 19th February) and Birmingham (25th & 26th February). Tickets are available for just £10 per person in advance

Nice try, BF. ALL SCOTTS REGIMENTS WILL ADHERE TO THE STANDARDS. They're not Australians. They're SCOTTS REGIMENT!

As with the Guards Regiments across the Commonwealth, of which Nigeria and India are members, the Scotts Regiments also have a brotherhood newsletter, including Nigeria and India, detailing promotions and events. I have not checked recently but I know for a fact that our newsletter will detail the Australian SCOTTS CO and RSM!

As to the Guards, the SCOTTS adhere to standards ... and the standards are the uniform.

Come ON! CAN THE SCOTTS LET THE GUARDS GET THE UPPER HAND!

Sir, it isn't the 'upper hand' that worries me, but parts somewhat 'lower'.

And allow the Guards to say we don't adhere to uniform? I think not!

BF, you've made the claim. I have newsletters from the Scotts in Australia where they caught non-dressed code. Will you care to back up your claim with the Australian QR&O that the Scotts in Australia have a different dress than the rest of the Scotts in the Commonwealth?

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I'm not making 'claims', I'm making jokes.
