In night time --- hardly to say .... the M829A1 couldn't pierce the T-80Us front armor, but the thermals is the very nice advantage ... if it will the good weather, than the M1A1s spot the enemys first .... but in bad weather the visibility will be the same for both ... it's about 800 m -- T-80U could allow this distance with its IR-semi-active night-vision system "Buran-PA" ... not so good as thermals, but it's enough to spot M1A1s .... indeed...that will be correctly to compare the T-80U with M1A2, because only A2 modification hardly reach the T-80U's armor ... for M1A1 I suggest the T-80B(1978) and T-80BV(1985) modifications .... their charactiristics much more closer to each other .... :roll:

The US M829A1/A2 has better penatration performance than the Russian 3BM32/42 round.

Arena has never been tested objectively as a practical matter hard to beleive that it can pick armor rounds approachng at that velocity and defeat them
Thats why there is 9K119 for targets like M1.
If an M-1 can survive 3 APFSDS shots from point blank range, how can something possibly get through that armor? The worst it could do is knock out the tracks.

that is not really a serious question M1A2 without a doubt the reason why T80 has ARENA to defeat M1A2 rounds as the optics and ballistics computers will not allow T80 to engage M1A2 at extreme ranges answer me why would a Tank carry ATGM's if it main gun was worth a crap ???

That adds to a point that sabots are practically wortless against modern tanks. It's been like that for years, and development of sabots in Russia stopped in like 1985.
There is many vulnerable places still - like top of the turret/engine and so on.
Sabots work really well, it's just the M1A1 has really great armor.
