What is opinion here on the board as to the pro's of the T-80U? What are it's positive traits? Also, what are the con's and negative traits for the M1A2? I have my own list on those but interested in other people's opinions.
The reason I ask, is that you always hear negative things about Russian equipment, especially after Gulf War I and II and how great the M1 series is. But you rarely hear *proven* and *factual* things about the T-80.
The great things about Soviet Tanks. Is the push they gave the Stinger Missle in Afghanistan.

And the push they gave the A-10 and the M1A1/A2 Abrams in Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi freedom.

Um, are you sure about that one? As you undoubtably know, the Stinger is a SAM

Don't tell the Afghan War alumni that. I've seen footage of them attacking a Soviet Convoy with Stingers

Man, how did I forget that: 1. Partisans are, by neccesity and their very nature, extremely resourceful (in Tom Clancy's book Cardinal Of The Kremlin, he has some Mujahadeen using the Stinger's heat-seeking warhead to take out a heated guard tower in the middle of winter) and 2. That the Mujahadeen also used an anti-tank weapon (the RPG-7) as a makeshift SAM. Shame on me :(
However, your previous comment was about the push that Soviet tanks gave the Stinger. I would think that it was the Hind that gave the Stinger the push

Just for the record, a Stinger's small blast/frag warhead would be nigh on useless against even an APC, let alone a tank.

Would blow the shit out of a jeep or truck though.

Yeah, that heat-seeker would just love the engine compartment on a tank...I can't imagine a tank getting shot in the ass even with a small warhead like the Stinger would just shrug it off. Still and alll though, I would have to say that Soviet tanks and Stingers are not thought of in the same sentence. Now, if one says FLYING tank, then we can talk

Ever see the CNN Documentary "Mujihadeen"? Part of it contains the footage of a Soviet Convoy getting ambushed. A Russian APC was layed waste to. Think it took two Stingers.

You get a clear behind the launcher view of the APC geting hit with a Stinger Missle.

I'm sorry but the Stinger has a warhead with the explosive effect of a fragmentation grenade. It won't do anything to an APC.

Feel free to check out that documentary. Those must be some pretty powerful fragmentation grenades thier being compared to. Since an APC did get toasted by one pretty good.

That and they showed a few Russian Heli's being destroyed by Stingers. Almost as if they were made out of toothpicks & glue.

You must be mistaken because a Stinger can not knock out an APC. It can disable it but it can't penetrate the armor and kill the people inside.

Are there especially weak spots that the Stinger can exploit? Remember we are talking about BTR and BMP type APCs. I seem to recall that some version of the BTR (I think) having gas tanks of some kind in the doors!
As an aside, this all seems slightly odd, talking about using a man-portable SAM as a common anti-APC weapon...

    Lunatock,

I don't know what you saw but it wasn't Stingers. They don't armed for 100 metres after launch as a safety measure.
