Several reasons.
1) They had become the Soviets' southern flank against China.
2) Cambodia
3) The Boat People and not so much humanitarian reasons as staggering China with with over 500,000 refugees.
4) Sino-VN Border Clashes
They could not force VN from withdrawing their troops from Cambodia without sending an evicting army into Cambodia.
Strategically, the Chinese needed to break the Soviet encirlement and the 79 War effectively destroyed VN as a reliable southern front.

The Vietnamese had over 4 months to prepare for war (and they were prepared despite the propaganda that the defences were just militia, they were battle hardened regforce troops in everything but name) and they still lost 3 Provincial Capitals. They were forced to withdraw 1 or 2 divisions from Cambodia but the fact remained nothing they did stopped the Chinese onslaught and these were 2nd rate Chinese troops. The best Chinese soldiers and toys went north to face a possible Soviet counter strike.
While the Chinese sufferred immense casualties, the Vietnamese sufferred alot more. Their entire Northern Defences were destroyed beyond repair and their militia (alot of battle hardened troops) were wiped out.
In 1984 when the Chinese committed better troops and equipment and what's more important, better decisions (limited OPOBJs), their performances were drastically different.

The furniture had to be brought afresh, and i just about know all the designs in the market.
The living room is still being designed by my wife, and I have stopped giving suggestions as they are rejected outright. She has been kind enough to allow me some space for my regimental momentos though.
My 5 yr old daughter is the only one who liked my idea of allowing her to paint one wall in her room, with big huge sunflowers.
They are priority one.Good to see that you put family first.

ANy of you considered Russia taking a stab at this while a war between India and CHina takes place. I mean there are border conflicts between the two, and I dont think Russia really likes the Chinese too much. I mean, I'm guessing when Officer of Engineers said that only 50% of the Chinese is really combat ready, they probably put their strong next to the Indians right? Doesnt this give Russia an open end for attack? Its the perfect flank right? As far as Pakistan, can it really turn the tide of the war if there were a major conflict between China and India? COuldnt India just suppress the paks easily for a defensive stance, without attacking at all? If this post made any sense at all, or even a little plz answer or put in your two cents.

The winning depends on many factors, like environment, training, combat exposure, armaments, will power..... etc..
I will take my stab at this.
Somebody posted that India's army uniformed is only 135 000? Was that a joke or something? A couple years ago, when Pakistani terrorists attacked the Indian Parliament in a ploy to kill the Prime Minister (which failed, as usual), India posted more than 150 000 UNIFORMED soldiers along the border. India has about 1 million soldiers, 2nd to China in the world. India would not win in an ALL OUT WAR with the Great Americans. There is no chance. If there was, why is India still buying weapons from other countries? America is the no.1 country in the world, the most dominant and the most strongest. No other country can even stand next to them. But in this thread, we are debating land war, without any type of nuclear missiles or airplanes. It is soldier vs soldier. India would outnumber American soldiers greatly, and Indians have a different way of fighting. The Indian army does not back off when they have 1 or 2 casualties, they run forward without fear of death. The difference here is, American army is smarter. Indians are nothing like Iraqis or Afghanis, they will not "hide" behind hostages or villages or anything/anywhere else, they will stand there and fight. They will put their life on the line NOT TO LET AMERICA CROSS THE BORDER. NOT LET AMERICAN SOLDIERS CROSS THE BORDER AT ALL COSTS. That is their mentality. Take Punjab for example, the civilians will take up arms and stand next to the soldiers and fight if there was any type of invasion. India's air power can't really be talked about, because in one of the Indo-Pakistan wars, when Pakistan "tried" to invade into India, India had to go to war without its air force, and India annihilated them within hours (I think it was 2 hours, or 2 days, but no chance of it being longer than 2 days). That was out of the blue, and with a war with America, it wouldn't be out of the blue, it would be a set date. So Indian Armed Soldiers will be ready for the onslaught. I do not see the Americans losing the battle, and I do not see the Indians losing. Even if America ended up winning, India would not surrender or sign the documents, especially the state of Punjab. The sikhs there have never surrendered or admitted defeat. Read up on both world wars. Indians stood next to the British Armed Soldiers in the world wars, the vets know how the Indians fought.
Hence, I say this would be the bloodiest war of all, the highly skilled vs the highly brave.

Vietnam didn't beat the U.S.
We lost the war because of ****ing embecile leadership, BUT WE WON ALL THE BATTLES when those gooks weren't busy playing hit-and-run. You're forgetting who WON WW2. If it wasn't for the U.S. you Indians would be speaking Japanese or German. Heck, probably even Russian or Chinese.

OUR SSBN subs could lunch TRIDENT ICBM's from San Diego and the crew would be at baseball game afterwards. And if India even bothers to fight, our satellites ( does your country even have a cell phone satellite up there or TV?)would detect your response and a U.S. air strike would be on it's way to your asses even before India could even lift a finger. You guys don't even have enough *lol* state of the FART SU-30 2005 model whatever to intercept all our B-52's , B-1s, B-2s (in your dream here buddy), F-117, and F-15E attack aircrafts.
You also forget what we did to the 4th largest Army back in 1991. That was only 14 years ago when you Indian posters were still sucking on goat milk. Even Iraq back then could beat India and they had the experience with their war with Iran and Kuwait. Who have the Indians fought lately?
