Hate to throw something on such an old dead thread, but as a U.S. soldier I once participated in training with some Russian soldiers. Great bunch of guys and we all got along famously. Thier weapons where not as good as ours, but their physical conditioning and H2H skills where superior to ours. Our academic and tactical skills were superior to thiers though. They made us realize where we could stand improvement as we did the same for them.

There can be no this army versus that army.

It will all depend on the environment, the situation, the terrain, the weather and the population (whether for or against) et al.

Which is exactly why I didn't hazzard to guess a winner. You are quite correct sir.

I would find this thread more interesting if they compared the training that each force recieves. I found some of the Russians training very impressive in many aspects, as I did ours. But they where definitely distinctive in nature.

I personally think both militaries Russian and American are both very simular, I would think the US would have an edge at fighting wars overseas where as the Russians may struggle a little bit. I doubt very seriously if either military could invade the other country one on one both countries are very vast and I would think that both militaries would have a edge on their home turf being so closely matched. At least without help anyway.

    +1

The Russian Army is downsizing, and going to a more Western/professional Army model, as it is far superior to a conscript force, that is top heavy and lacking in flexibility. NCOs are the backbone of any good army, and that fact hasn't been lost on them. You can't have an effective force of Colonels and PFCs.
