Norinco SP-1 and SP-3 Truck Based Self-Propelled Artillery System.

SP-1 and SP-3 Truck Based Self-Propelled Artillery System.

The Norinco SP family of Truck Based self-propelled (SP) artillery system was first revealed during the 2007 Abu Dhabi International Defence Exhibition (IDEX 2007). It is once again on display at this year’s IDEX with more detailed sales brochures and technical diagrams. China’s debut of the L-15 advanced jet trainer marks a major push into the Middle East Arms market after the success of the PLZ-45 155mm SP artillery deals with Kuwait.

The SP project commenced in 2002 with two variants: 155mm/52 caliber SP1 and the 122mm (D-30) based SP3. The truck based artillery concept is gaining popularity in recently years as they are an inexpensive option to air transport and can utilize the highway routes that are becoming more available. It will face stiff competition as the Truck Based Self-Propelled Artillery market is already dominated by more established players such as BAE’s Lightweight Mobile Artillery System, the French (CAEASR) Nexter Systems and the ATMOS 2025 Autonomous Self Propelled 155mm Gun. The advantage of the SP family is that it can fire both the Russian or the NATO based laser-guided projectile as well as the standard HE rounds.

It has been confirmed that a small quantity of SPs are already in PLA service since October 2009.

So they are where we were back in the late 70s to mid 80s.

Laser guided arty rounds. Pinpoint accuracy. If the FO and the gun are in the right place. Like Copperhead, the 12 mile sniper round.

Wellllllll, except during conditions that effect the laser return. Like fog, snow, rain, dust, smoke. Conditions found on every battlefield. Then they suffer from CHS.

Thats one of the reasons that we quit making Copperhead rounds in the early 80s and started working on something more reliable.

But I don't think thats an option for the Chinese. They don't own a GPS system. never depend on your enemy for targeting.
Its called Tourist Season. So why can't we shoot them?

actually, the usage of laser guided rounds is still new to the PLA, they only started using them in the early 2000 after the induction of the imported Russian Krasnopol rounds.

I wonder what the length of time is, from hitting the brakes to the first round leaving the tube?

does 155mm 39 cal/45cal/52 cal fires the same round?
    yes and no.

The Indian has tested the Russian Krasnopol guided arty round from all their 152mm systems such as the D-20, S23, 2S3m and the 2S19 and also their "other" 155mm systems such as the FH-77B, M109, G5 and G6 in test demos at their Kargil test range.

However, it is not a wise decision if one tries to fire a traditional 155mm/39 cal round from a 155/52 cal tube, because of the stress difference, it can really damage the gun and compromise the safety of the crew. now, there are solutions out there to get around that, but again, it is not recommended.

Gun Grape should be able to give you a better answer.
