So, what's the general concensus on WAB with the whole Rogue Warrior series of books? Semi-factual autobiography, or pure rubbish? Some of the stuff Marcinko throws out has a ring of truth to it.
"Yeah. See, we plan ahead, that way we don't do anything right now. Earl explained it to me." - Tremors, 1990
man, its a book written by a former soldier , so his first try would be to make his presence felt, create a controversy to get some air. so of course its not all true . moreover marcinko was played down by the navy .they registered corruption charges against him (this is for real) and bullied him politically, he claims the reason was that he with his RED CELL team (the precursor to seal team six - SPECWARDEVGRU) penetrated some of the most fortified installations of us military including air force one which was an embarrasment to both navy and the us government. so he has a lot made up.
but the book i referred to you is by an sf researcher more notably a journalist and if u go thru the book the seemingly boredom of the literature is a proof that its not marcinko kind affairs. not that he wanted to write it boring but 'cuz it was a matter of solely reporting the war and the role sf's played in it.
I read both writers. I don't know enough about the whole Haney controversy, but Marcinko really is a jackass.
He embezzled the Navy. Besides, his prose is painful.
All those who are merciful with the cruel will come to be cruel to the merciful.
-Talmud Kohelet Rabbah, 7:16.
What's funny about all this is that if most of us actually told the truth, no one would believe it or much less read it. So I guess I'm really just jealous that Marcinko and Haney have made a living spinning thier tales, true, embellished or not. More power to 'em! I've heard a lot of shooters give the same grief about Maj. John Plaster and his book on sniping. Of course after shutting them down on the range, I recommend they read it.
I was at a range once and some guy with a bolt action savage was bragging on his markmanship. At the time I was shooting a sub-MOA DPMS LR-308. It was a tack driver. So in a conversation he proceeded to discount Maj. Plaster, Carlos Hathcock, Chuck Mahwinney and semi-auto sniper rifles. So after out shooting him big time, he asked where I learned to shoot. I told him I only read about half of Plasters book and went out bought this rifle and that today was only the second time I ever shot a rifle. Should have seen the look on his face. Priceless.)

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is to know to not use it in a fruit salad.
