In all fairness I believe it's impossible to create a accurate poll concerning the Generals of all world history, since there are numerous I would add Willington as well, Nelson was a great navel commandor and so on and on.

From that list, I picked Alexander. The American commander I admire most is Chester Nimitz. Of all the American commanders in World War II, only Nimitz managed to win a fight in which he faced superior forces, both in numbers and quality. For the first year of the war, the Japanese had better equipment, more highly trained men, and superior numbers, and yet within 1 year of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were retreating.

Mainly because of the US showing there muscles Japan had no illusion of that they would win if they engaged US in a direct war yet they where forced to do so.
But never mind Yes Nimitz was a Excellent Admiral, I believe the Navel honored him by having one of there Three dreadnoughts named after him..

I agree with two that have already been named:
Belisarius, and Nathanael Greene. I would also add that in the Pacific War, the Japanese commander who comes first to my mind is Tadamichi Kuribayashi.
