Okay, two-part:

1) Most air-to-air kills by a single aircrew in a single day, and
2) most air-to-air kills by a single aircrew on a single mission.

Wake Island, your question Julie.

BTW Wake Island was also the last place the famed aviator Charles Lindberg saw combat.

uh...I'm showing something else. What year is that incident you are referred to?

{edit}

I've just read about the incident you posted, and yours is a heck of alot more disasterous than mine. (Loss of 9,400 people)

I was after the incident where at least 1,547 people were killed when the boiler of the sidewheeler Sultana exploded on April 27, 1865, on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee. Many of those killed in the blast where Union soldiers who had recently been freed from Confederate prison camps. The most unusual survival story was that of a man who used a knife to kill a live alligator that was in a wooden crate on board, then used the crate to float away.

I think mine is within the boundary of US American history.

Your answer deserves recognition.

Your turn Southie.
