Between 15 November and 15 December 1939 the Lorraine (formerly known as the Normandie), as the company command tank, was experimentally up-armoured at the Société des Aciéries d'Homecourt to make it immune to standard German antitank guns. The front armour was enhanced to 90 mm, the side to 65 mm. In this configuration weighing about 75 tons, the Lorraine had at that time the thickest armour of any operational tank and is probably still the heaviest operational tank ever. It (or possibly the Champange)was captured intact in 1940 still loaded on railcars as it was shipped to the front. it was taken to Moscow after the war but dissapeared in 1948.

Hmmm. I would have thought it was the German K vehicle. Weighed something over 100 tons and carried a crew of 22 with 4 cannon. Crew and cannons were in the outer sponsons of the tracks and twin engines were in between.
Only one was completed and a second one almost finished. Sort of like the Maus tanks of the next World War.

the Char 2C was operational for nearly 20 years, and the Normandie command vehicle remains the heaviest operational tank of all time.

Would it be 1889, the year of the Paris Exposition?

The largest tank ever built was the Maus, designed in 1942 by Ferdinand Porsche under direct order from Adolf Hitler. Weighing 188 tons, the Maus was armed with a 128mm cannon and a coaxial 75mm gun, and covered with 180-240mm of armour.

Right, and I didn't say it was. I was just posting it because I couldn't believe the size of that monster.
