The word "sniper" comes from snipe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe

Sniper works alone, except US snipers.

The US snipers don't operate alone?

Sir, it's usually a two man team and they act more as recee than independent forces of opportunity.

I think Carlos Hathcock got more kills for a Sniper in Nam then anyone else. Supposily he killed alot more then his official count.

93 confirmed kills, probably over 200 unconfirmed.

Finnish sniper Simo Hayha is the highest scoring sniper of all time, with anywhere from 500-600 kills made during the Russo-Finnish War.

One man takes the role of spotter (often armed with an M14 or M4 and equipped with a spotting scope) and the other of sniper. These roles are interchangable between men.

He had around 300 probables.

But 'only' the 93 confirmeds.

Quite frankly, it boggles the mind. That's a lot of people to see staring back at you in your dreams.

Chuck Mawhinney is credited with 216 probables in addition to his 103 confirmed.

Here's a link with a little information about Eric England. He, like Adelbert Waldron, deserves to be better known.

http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lds1952/index.html

If you scroll down and look at the photo on the right side of the page you see England (facing camera) getting an award. The two men to the left (England's right) are former Georgia Governor Zell Miller and Jim Land, Hathcock's commander in Vietnam.

The photo at the bottom left of the page is another one of Governor Miller and England.

My CO said he quit counting at around 220. He said it served no purpose (his advice to me).

That's what I tell people who talk about joining up to become snipers. For some reason there's this really weird sniper-cult that the civilian public seem to fall into where they think its some sort of glamourous job. It's especially funny when people tell me they think it'd be easy.
Idiots.
Oh and no offence snipe, I blame Tom Berenger.

You forgot this board's own M21sniper.

He takes out about 3 or 4 Liberals and/or Trolls a week around here.

Sgt Alvin C York, his marksmanship was so good an entire German company surrended. Offical sniper or not.........

Sgt York, December 13, 1887 – September 2, 1964) was a United States soldier, famous for his heroism in World War I. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine-gun nest, killing 32 German soldiers and capturing 132 others as well as knocking out 35 German machine guns, completely overtaking a German controlled hill.

all in a single days work

That one battle won him...
The Congressional Medal of Honor -USA
Croix de Guerre - France
Croce di Guerra - Italy
War Medal - Montenegro

He also took out a German patrol by picking them off one at a time, working from the rear of the enemy patrol line to the front. IIRC he neve rmissed a shot in combat and did all his shooting over open sites

That movie was hideously bad.

Anyway, sniping is actually mind-numbingly boring the overwhelming majority of the time.
