U/S Preacher barred from the U/K

An American Christian preacher who caused global uproar by threatening to burn the Koran has been barred from visiting Britain, the British government said Wednesday.

Florida Pastor Terry Jones, whose threat to burn Islam's holy book on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks last year provoked widespread condemnation, had been invited by a group that is critical of Islamic immigration into Britain.

"The government opposes extremism in all its forms which is why we have excluded Pastor Terry Jones from the UK. Numerous comments made by Pastor Jones are evidence of his unacceptable behaviour," a spokesman for Britain's Home Office said.

"Coming to the UK is a privilege, not a right, and we are not willing to allow entry to those whose presence is not conducive to the public good," he said. "The use of exclusion powers is very serious and no decision is taken lightly or as a method of stopping open debate."

Jones, who heads a tiny church called the Dove World Outreach Centre, told Britain's Sky News he was "disappointed" by the ban.

"We would ask it be reconsidered and the ban lifted," Jones said.

"We feel this is against our human rights to travel and freedom of speech."

A group called "England Is Ours," on its website, said it had invited Jones to visit Britain and "join us in a series of demonstrations against the expansion of Islam and the construction of Mosques here in the UK."

Other groups had urged the British government to ban Jones.

Is this bowing to Islamic pressure groups , as the UK allows/allowed hate preaching Islamists to sprout their hate (abu hamza frinstance ) what a soft bunch of bastards we have in power here , and double standards , ok maybe it stops unrest but they ( Islamists )

ARE ALLOWED TO PROTEST AT THE HOMECOMING OF BRIT SOLDIERS WITH IMPUNITY ON THE STREETS OF ENGLAND .

Guess what? You don't have a human right to travel. The UK did nothing to curtail your free speech. They curtailed your visitation rights. You can say whatever you like, and if you somehow make it into the UK, you can say whatever you like in the UK. But the UK has no obligation to let you into it's borders

Tankie, I don't see avoiding conflict as necessarily caving to the fanatical Muslims. There are enough hatemongers on both sides that are already in the UK, is there really a need to import more from overseas?

You can look at this as caving to the fanatic Muslims, but a more level headed Muslim (they do exist, I promise you) might actually look at this with some goodwill, that they're not letting this douche bag in.

It's a very fine line between the two, I'll admit...

Very true Benny , i just met with some Muslims who believe me were the friendliest people in their country i have ever met ( Egypt ), all i am saying is their seems to be double standards here , shithouse he may be , but everyone has an opinion , his has been heard worldwide BBC so why stop him entering the uk at someones invite? He will still get his views across worldwide thro some media outlet IE his book , Islam is the devil ? peeps here and everywhere will buy it like Salman Rushdie's , no doubt he will be receiving a fatwah some time .Its just been on the BBC that he is to appeal the decision for entry .

If we had got tough when we should have done it would not be an issue, ...... because he would realise it would be a waste of time coming to the UK anyway..........

Damn! You guys caught onto our plan to get him out of the country and drop him in Old Blighty in an attempt to trash the Wills/Kate nuptuials!

IMO, All are welcome to Freedom of Speech. But if the UK feels this may cause a problem at home well then that is their Right as well to not allow him into the country. The price you pay for having such views.
