Thread: Stupid things your friends have said relating to military equipment.

"Wheres the trigger for that big gun?"

My grandfater actually did that, minus the marines. He joined the army and lied about his age, great grandmother sent off letters he was kicked out and could not go back. He turned around and joined the airforce and was a tailgunner in a Halifax (I still have his AG wing). The story there goes someone got suspicious as he kept growing and could no longer fit into his position. Long story short he got booted. Upon his return he was of the proper age and joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served out the war and then Korea. He spent his entire career in the Navy and was even buried at sea when he passes away as an old man. He even got to go on one last cruise as the ship got diverted away from the North Sea on an emergency.

He was also still in when Canada amalgamated all the forces under one banner. So, he served in all four of Canada's military wings.


Off topic I know but thought you might like the story.

On a bad note; some jackass stole all his medals out of his car on Rememberance Day while he was in the Legion!!!!!

This reminds me of a time about 12 years ago I was taking some friends on Petersburg National Battlefield and came to the replica of The Dictator


Its a 13 inch seacoast mortar with a range of about 3800 yards. In this picture it is shown on the eastern side of Petersburg about 400 yards forward of the replica's position today. this is what it looks like today



While standing in the pit a tour group came up and the "leader and guide" started to tell his group how the Union forces used The Dictator to shell Battery #5 to open the Battle of Petersburg!!!


Battery 5 is about 75 yards forward of this position.

My buddy and I cracked up laughing and walked away.....hope thye didn't pay too much for the tour!
