Tankie and other esteemed members from the UK, may I offer my deep regrets and sorrow that your countryman lost his life without reason in my country and state.

It is a shame, no need for you to apologise though.

That's a mere hour and forty-five minutes from here. My condolences to the family.

Actually, when I was stationed at FT Stewart GA in the 3rd Battalion 19th Infantry in the mid-1980s I used to regularly draw my M1911A1 .45 ACP from teh arms room when I was the Battalion S-4 (HQ Company) and when I was a company commadner (A Company) ay lunch time and head over to the Road and Gun CLuib pistol range and shoot for abotu 20 - 30 minutes. Did it about 3 or 4 times a month when we weren't in the field.

I would fire privately purchased ammunition.

It was a regular practice then. Not sure now.

As for MAJ Hasan and access to the base with weapons in his vehicle....possesion and ownership of privately owned weapons is perfectly legal. If you live on post you have to register them with the provost marshal's office. If you live off post they just need to be registered IAW lcoal weapons laws. And for post access I am sure he had post registration sticker on his car and had an ID card with a chip implant called a CAC card. EVERY service member has one...you cna not access a computer in the military without one. The sticker on the windshield and the CAC card is all he needs to get on any military installation without a search.

I have one around my neck and my FT Lee sticker gets me into any military post I have ever gone to...with the exception of some areas of Quantico and Norfolk Naval Station.

And my condolences to the family of the slain in Amarillo...RIP.
