    Trooping the Colour

So, today the Colours of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards are being Trooped in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen to mark her official Birthday.

The Queen's official birthday celebration is marked annually by the Trooping of the Colour and tomorrow, 13 June, it will be the duty of the 1st Battalion, The Irish Guards to take its place at the head of the parade.

Soldiers of the Household Division will be on parade to mark the Queen's Official Birthday in Horse Guards Parade.

This year the colour being trooped in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen is that of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Royal Colonels (Prince Charles, Princess Anne and The Duke of Kent) will also be on parade.

More than 1400 soldiers will be on parade in the traditional uniforms of the Household Cavalry, Royal Horse Artillery and Foot Guards. Many more will be working behind the scenes to ensure all goes smoothly.

There will be 200 horses on parade and more than 400 musicians from ten bands and corps of drums will march and play as one. The famous Drum Horses of the Mounted Bands will also be on parade.

The Guards, or 'Micks' as they are known, have spent the last six weeks preparing for the parade, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.

Based at the historic Victoria Barracks in Windsor, the unit is coming to the end of its ceremonial duties and will shortly begin the task of pre-deployment training for a six-month tour of Afghanistan.

They have had a very busy few years. In December 2007 the unit returned from a six-month tour of Iraq, moving from Mons Barracks in Aldershot to the barracks in Windsor.

In May the battalion received new 'colours' or regimental flag from the Queen and it is these colours they will be parading tomorrow.

Couldn't be there this time unfortunately, even in the crowd. So I am having to settle with watching it on TV.
