Just joking.........very hard way to learn a lesson.
I remember much the same thing. Joined Junior Leaders Regiment in Bovington, and you get to meet some strange people from around the country, Jocks, Scousers, Cockneys, Geordies, Taffs, Janners and you can't understand each other, the vast majority come from tuff backgrounds. I remember when we had to polish the floors, get a guy to lay on a 'Blanket Hairy' whilst the rest of teh room used to throw it around the floor, had the desired effect.

In the gym, stood in a circle hands behind your back, the PTI used to walk around place a boxing glove in someones hand, once you recieved it you had to batter the guy to your left as much as you could until he had run around the circle and back to his old position, great fun, but a little sore. Then it came to end of term, all marched to the barbers, each of us got a Number 1, right down to the bone, back to the gym for some 'Milling', we would be paired off, get into a Boxing ring, stand toe to toe, and batter the living daylights out of each other for 3 minutes, that was for thre rounds, if you never fought back, it would carry on until you did. Needless to say, no came back from leave with stories of new girlfriends. Oh they wwere thedays. )

No I think I understand, this is something that he has never forgotten and he has been able to use that lesson all through his life. Especially his army life.
You have to have respect for you team, unit , group so that you work as one.I understand also that we are talking life and death situations. Also I understand that you have to be cruel to be kind. That object lesson as you so rightly say has made him into the soldier that other men would respect and be proud to stand next to.

The other kind off hazing etcc.. that goes on behind closed doors ...no!
I think thats just downright brutallity played out by people with very small minds.
