Training on Sunday

So, everything's been worked out, I take the oath of alliegence tomorrow morning, and I'll be shipping up to ITC Catterick on Sunday morning to start my training with the British Army. I've bought an absolute mountain of gear that they said I have to take with me, just had a great weekend at a friend's place down in Brighton to celebrate my last weekend as a free man, and now I'm itching to get started. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous at the same time, especially since I'm a redhead (they LOVE redheads in the British Army), and my fitness, while vastly improved, is still nothing special, although I did comfortably beat most other applicants at Selection.

So, after a year of saving money and working on my fitness and travelling around, it's finally happening, nice to know I haven't come all this way for nothing. So, come the 28th of November, all things going according to plan, I'll be WAB's official embassador to the Royal Irish Regiment.

Well, by now everything will be done and dusted. Your in Training in Catterick will be hard, but hard to everyone, so stick it out. Expect the initial shouting and screaming from the JNCOs this is part of the course. Before you know it, you will be "pitying" the next intake..Good Luck and all the Best to you

Remember when the Going gets Tough, the Tough gets Going!

No training is hard.

Dave is just impressing you.

If he and me can make it, so can you!

The initial days are bad and one just wants to quit.

I will be frank. I wanted to quit.

My father just sent me a book, "The King's Story". It was about the horrors that the Duke of Windsor had to face himself and he took it!

A great book and I do not regret having taken the thick and thin and survived!!

A hint. Use permenant marker to write your name on everything you own, including inside of shoes, your underwear wasteband and your t-shirt tags. It will be a lot easier when your barracks failed inspection and the Drill Sergeants throw your stuff out the window.

Get lots of safety pins so you can keep your bunk sheets tight, then call out an empty bunk to sleep on for the rest of training. It saves a lot of time in the morning, but the DS will be pissed if he flips your bunk and the sheets stay on tight.

Basic was pretty fun; my advise to you is go to church on Sundays so you can sham on details, I had a friend who went to several services every Sunday.

Already done with my civvie gear, I've been warned it's a good idea since Catterick is meant to be somewhat notorious for thievery.

Cheers for the tips and encouragement guys, I'm sure I'll have some decent stories to share.

It's not so much that everyone's a thief, more that the pay of a private soldier is austere to say the least.

You are embarking on quite the adventure, I wish you all the best. Remember not to take it personally and you'll do just fine. Do keep us informed of all the sordid details.
