One thing on history channel that's still worth watching is Modern Marvels. That show has history and the "how did they" factor all rolled into one.
Ancient Marvels isn't half-bad either.

When it comes to hardware, any network usually has moments of wrong footage ...... some more than others. I remember the history channel voice over talking about Soviet Nuc subs .... and showing Foxtrots. Or a PBS voice over about the US sub war in the Pacific and showing a U-Boat. Or the same show talking about WW II and showing the Northampton CC-1. As a researcher, it makes it necessary to take what is presented on tv with a very big grain of salt. For the most part, what is presented isn't taken as fact without checking it out and usually at best, it's an practice of getting names and seeing what they have written.

On a similar note: years ago, the Discovery Channel use to have forensic and FBI shows on the forefront (still do at times but one has to really search for them). But then, they went what I call Biker and loaded it all up with things like Monster Garage, Myth Busters, and such. Hardly educational and more oriented to entertainment of some audience.

From what is said here, it sounds like the other 'historic' channels have done the same. Probably a similar reason why there is now wrestling on Sci-Fi.

It may all be about the buck ....... but they will do it without mine.

The History channel, the Military Channel. They are both victims of American versions of World events. I remember watching the old classic M.A.S.H,famous for historical follies ,and when old Potter claimed with much reverence the hard time the dough boys had at Vimy I am sure Canadian vets (we are down to 1 now)were rolling their eyes in exasperation.

Some of the documentaries and history programming you get on the BBC chanels is the best I've seen anywhere. I loved the doco's over there that we do not get in North America. I seem to remember Three Men in a Trench as one I liked and other ones where they dig up battlefields etc.

Oh and Top Gear, I don't think we get that in North America do we? I've not been home in years.

Straight from the Gunny's mouth: Mail Call is being re-tooled a bit.

It has been renamed Trigger Time, increased to one hour and shot in HD.

The new episodes should out around March or so.

Still freakin' annoying that they aren't re-running any of the Season 1-7 eps though.

Well he was given an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant by the USMC.

And people like it because Gunny is funny.

And because he addresses a wide variety of different eras and subjects in Mail Call ... and does so with humor.

I had just heard about the "new" Mail Call from a friend who also said something about how they are adding a law enforcement and fire/rescue aspect to the show; is this true?

Like in "Not real" a PR stunt, doesn't mean anything. Doesn't increase his retirement check ect... How many of the other Honorary Marines or people that have received Honorary Rank wear it on their uniform or use it in their name?

There are a lot of real Gunnies, both active duty and retired, that were not happy with General Jones giving away "Honorary" rank. Nor the little PR "I'm super Marine" that Ermey posted about it on his web site. Or that he wears the chevrons on his real uniforms.

The only official "Honorary" rank was that for military personnel that are what use to be called Tombstone promotions. Upon retirement personnel that had been awarded the Medal of Honor, Navy/Distinguished Service/Air Force cross were advanced 1 rank. But it didn't count towards retirement pay. It would be the rank however if you were called back to active service in time of war. That ended in the late 50s. Now those hero's are awarded a 10% increase in retirement pay.

General Jones was also the one that made Chuck Norris and "Honorary Marine" and Jim Nabor's an "Honorary PFC" than an "Honorary Corporal".

No wonder he was able to continue service after being CMC. He had the PR angle down pat.

(edit) sorry for the rant but I EARNED my Gunny stripes. I get a little ticked when I see something I worked hard for being given away, then used for self promotion

I fully understand your frustration old timer, nor did I mean to imply that he earned his stripes. However, I'm sure you understand why it was a useful move for the Corps, considering how much good publicity he brings to the Marines in particular and to the military in general.

Cheers to all of the real Gunnery Sergeants!
